Netflix has two new documentaries dealing with chess. One is on Judit Polgar as the only woman ever to crack the top 10. The other is on the stupid saga around Magnus accusing Hans Niemann of cheating (Niemann won the game fair and square). The better movie is the Polgar film because it captures the feel and the aesthetics of chess tournaments prior to the digital age. When this was all battled out in mostly USSR countries on analog clocks with cheap wooden pieces. This picture below is not from the film - it’s of Karpov playing - but it has the same vibe you get in the film. There is a ‘culture’ around this era of chess that is not here with the online stuff and the YouTube videos.
