To celebrate @cluely's $15M round by @a16z, we're launching the same thing... for free! Oh, actually, we're completely open-sourcing it too. Good for them on the marketing front. In fact, despite the criticisms, they're pushing boundaries for one thing. I had always thought of overlays but never implemented them, so it definitely stirred me to act. So now's the time for us to push further too :) The core logic is the same as Cluely's: - Take a screenshot via the Apple SDK - Transcribe audio in parallel (not added yet) - Feed it to GPT - Stream it back We went even a step beyond and figured out how to do instant OCR in 200ms to generate even better responses. Screen parsing + image. I haven't added audio yet, as I don't attend meetings and have been busy building something else. However, I'm sure that if someone can Venmo me $300, we can create an open-source bounty to add it in. I'll add the links in the comment below, check them out, and I'm pumped to be alive at this time in history.

Can open source really win? Not sure if we should go all in on building a great product and keeping it free VS maintaining open source

To everyone praising Cluely, To everyone building an open-source Cluely competitor, You can never outcompete Cluely , not because you can’t build better tech, but because you can’t outplay @im_roy_lee in the distribution game. It’s not about the product. It’s all about distribution. Even if you build a better product than Cluely, you’re just helping them improve faster. Don’t study Cluely. Study the Cluely founders. Open-source Software is the future as AI becomes ubiquitous and 'BUILDERS GONNA BUILD'. @cluely raised $15m from @A16Z and one day later has a FREE open-source competitor. This will accelerate.

@chatgpt21 Maybe the moat is now the people behind the product and the way they make you feel, rather than only the product itself. It sort of makes marketing more important than the function/product itself

@nestersk @iannuttall Yeah, first to market advantage. But @peterthiel is a big fan of last mover's advantage. And in my last company, we lost to the 3rd mover, who reverse engineered my AI algo + raised funds + did SEO / business / paid ads / Forbes (see GetConch.AI vs Undetectable AI)

@iannuttall Funding rounds these days are just marketing expense for VCs. They pay for exposure via 3rd party content creators that are relatable to young people in tech.
