Signal is a dangerous app built by a nonprofit that refuses to sell your data. WhatsApp (owned by Meta) reads your messages to build an ad profile on you. Signal legally cannot. The encryption runs on your device. Their servers see nothing. Not your messages. Not who you talk to. Not when. It's completely free. No ads. No investors to answer to. No business model built on your private life. But DO NOT use it. We should all keep using WhatsApp so Mark Zuckerberg can keep charging $14 billion/year in ad revenue off conversations we thought were private. I'm putting the link below so you know exactly what to avoid. signal.org

Reminder - this is how civilisations typically collapse. There's usually no dramatic 'fall of Rome' or cataclysmic event. Just a slow grind downwards as you gradually notice potholes aren't filled in, roads collapse and are washed away, you can never see a doctor or a dentist and eventually muddle on with a missing tooth or held together with painkillers and tubigrips... Where casual petty theft becomes normalised and is unpunished, and everything goes up and in price (except your wages, so you can't keep up). Where an asset-owning elite is largely immune to all this, but gradually retreats behind walls, gates and private security. Next step might be rolling blackouts, which you'll get used to as well, as your children do their homework by paraffin lamps and candlelight. And you suddenly realise quite how far we have fallen.

Brazil has officially entered it’s Russian joke moment. A man is on a street corner in Moscow yelling “The president is an idiot “ Police surround him and handcuff him. They say “it is illegal to insult President Putin” He says “You don’t understand I mean the Ukrainian president, Zelensky, he is the one I was insulting “ The police captain says “you can’t fool us, everyone knows who the idiot is”

Everything happening behind the scenes is happening with the goal of absolute control of everyone. The push for digital IDs, CBDCs, Smart devices, wearables, Flock cameras, etc is all being done to get everyone and everything on the ledger or central database. That is why it’s so important for every person to resist the small shifts towards this kind of reality. Don’t use the REAL ID for air travel and refuse the facial scan at the airport. Remove the wire tappers from your home including all Smart devices, Alexa, etc. Remove as many data points as you can from the central database and live your life in private. Do business in person and get to know your local community so that you have a foundation for the inevitable move to a completely technological society.

Thanks for making my adulthood suck total fucking ass for turning everything into a surveillance state. The Supreme Court fucking sucks if they force mass surveillance on us.
WarMonitor@TheWarMonitor

The Supreme Court is weighing whether police can use “geofence warrants” to scan cell data from thousands of innocent people to find a suspect. It’s the first time the justices will decide if these digital dragnet searches violate constitutional protections.

Starting September 2026, a silent update pushed by Google, will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with Google, signed their contract, paid up, and handed over government ID. Google calls the new rule Android Developer Verification. This starts with Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand expanding worldwide in 2027 every app on certified Android phones must come from a developer who has registered their real identity with Google. This covers apps from the Play Store, third-party stores, and sideloaded APKs. Here’s what developers have to do: They sign up in Google’s new verification system, share their legal name, address, phone number, and ID, and pay a one-time $25 fee. Apps from unverified developers will be blocked or come with big warnings and extra steps. Google doing this to fight malware, the company says sideloaded apps are about 50 times more likely to contain bad software than Play Store apps. Android is becoming a little more controlled with all of this changes

Also, it turns out the temperature sensors would not go below zero, because why would that ever be the case for a server? So that flat spot in the graph actually got a bunch lower (that was the snow). In other news, rotational media did not really like being that cold.

Just about 17 years ago, a couple coworkers and I decided to put a decommissioned Dell PowerEdge 2650 on the roof. Why? Because we were curious, and it was to become scrap metal. We did absolutely nothing to weatherproof it, beyond setting it on two bricks, facing it away from the prevailing wind, putting a drip loop in the cabling, and using fiber networking so we wouldn't fry anything if it got zapped. Ran Linux, plotting its own sensor data via ipmitool, and presenting it via a web page served from the box itself. We put load on it using SETI@Home. It ran for about two months up there, even surviving 6" of snow, until a really gnarly thunderstorm drove water into the SCSI backplane and it shorted out. Continued running for a few more weeks, though, until not being able to write to disk was finally too much. Did not come back from a power cycle. Its hostname was Tevye, of course.

Keine Pointe.
Signal@signalapp

A response to recent reporting in Germany, in service of clarity and accountability: First, it’s important to be precise when it comes to critical infrastructure like Signal. Signal was not “hacked” — in that our encryption, infrastructure, and the integrity of the app’s code was not compromised. However, sophisticated attackers have engaged in a harmful phishing campaign, posing as “Signal Support” by changing their profile display name and using social engineering to trick people into handing over their credentials — information that allowed these attackers to take over some targeted Signal accounts. This is something that plagues any mainstream messaging app once it reaches the scale of Signal, but we know how high the stakes are given the trust people place in us. In the coming weeks, you’ll see us rolling out a number of changes to help hinder these kinds of attacks. Because we don’t collect user data, what we know about these attacks comes from the victims of phishing. And from what victims have told us, the attacks followed a broad pattern: after tricking people into revealing their Signal credentials, attackers then used those credentials to take over their account and also frequently changed the associated phone number. Because such a change results in de-registering your Signal accounts, attackers prepared people for this by telling them that being de-registered was intended behavior, and that all they would need to do is “re-register,” or, create a new account. When they moved to create a new Signal account — one that was now decoupled from their hijacked account — the victims thought they were logging back in to their primary account. As a result, many didn't notice the takeover. The compromised accounts were then weaponized to target the victims' contact lists by posing as the owners of the account. We understand the trust that people put in Signal, and how devastating this kind of social engineering can be. While it’s true that all messaging platforms are susceptible to scammers and phishing that betrays people’s trust and convinces them to “unlock the front door” where no backdoor exists, we are looking to do everything we can to help people avoid and detect such scams. For the time being, please stay vigilant against phishing and account takeover attempts. Remember that no one from Signal Support will ever send you a message request or ask for your registration verification code or Signal PIN. For an added layer of protection, you can enable Registration Lock in your Signal Settings (Account -> Registration Lock).
