The solar storm is affecting GPS signal reception in the auroral zones in the latest GEOCHRON map update. Watch the burgundy splotches in the auroral zone and on the nightside of Earth grow as the storm intensity increases. That is where GPS reception may not be trustworthy right now.

Just returning from the Space Weather Workshop in time for a nice solar storm! This one is strong enough to bump us past G2-levels momentarily, but because the storm is slow, aurora shows at mid-latitudes might remain substorm driven. Watch for them over the next 12+ hours!

Good question! It's due to all the flares we have been having plus the bumpy ride with some aurora together. This causes a lot of ionospheric disturbances, which take several days to settle down even after the flares go away. I just published a forecast on you tube that discusses this! I will post a link here along with some photos shortly! (Im on a plane travelling to the Space Weather Workshop momentarily.)

@TamithaSkov “yesterday on HF, D-layer absorption was unusually higher than expected. The 40m band was practically closed despite the heavy flares were 2 days ago. Is there still stuff in transit or other activity keeping the ionosphere unsettled?”

Revenge is sweet! Despite the Sun's best efforts to obliterate PanSTARRS Comet (C/2025 R3), it is now upstaging the Sun by photobombing Earth-based coronagraphs amid all the big flare and solar storm launches over the past several days. Even celestial bodies have their rivalries! Meanwhile, we could get a bumpy ride from a glancing blow from a solar storm today. Only minor effects are expected.

Region 4419 has really been putting on the biggest show (the upper right side of the Sun). But it will be rotating behind the limb in the next two days. However, Region 4420, which is only started to become magnetically complex has yet to rotate through the Earth-strike zone. Also, pay attention to the region that is just about to enter into Earth-view (far left side of the Sun). Solar Orbiter data should show us how quickly that region has been growing, but it looks like it could become another big-flare player over the next few days.

Wahoo! Our Sun's northern hemisphere is waking up again. We've had two near R2-level radio blackouts today including an M4.95-flare from Region 4419, which is nearing the west limb. Two other regions are also firing, Region 4420 and a region on the farside that will rotate into Earth-view over the next couple of days. Impacts to radio communication have been mild thus far, with only momentary degradation to the HF and VHF bands on Earth's dayside. But we could see more long-lasting radio blackouts over the next few days if these regions continue to grow.

Wow. Stunning views of rainbow aurora and bioluminescence in the water. Along with the blanket of stars, this makes for an enchanting scene. Wonder if you caught any Lyrid meteors in any of these dreamy shots? Thanks for reporting!

Some shots from last nights 3 #Aurora, #northernlight substorms, taken at the Dutch island #Terschelling Around 00:15, 00:45, and 01:20 AM (local Time) Including some #Bioluminescence in the ocean. @TamithaSkov @chunder10 @Vincent_Ledvina @Zeevonk_ @helgavanleur @StormchaserNL

Stunning deep purple pillars during the first part of the aurora show on Friday. So glad views ramped up again for many to catch through the weekend. Thanks for reporting!

Late to the party from Friday night 4/17 till 4am when the blueish rays come into play. We battled clouds state wide. Bummed I miss Steve and a picket fence Saturday night, but friends got it! :) North Bend, Washington. @TamithaSkov @theauroraguy @komonews #wawx

Some of the best aurora views due to this fast wind stream have been down in New Zealand! Gorgeous reds and greens nestled in with the Milky Way. The show is not over, you should have some great chances tonight too!

Stunning rainbow aurora pillars! So glad you caught the show during this second stage of intensifications. The fast wind has a lot of structure to it that helps drive a lot of substorm brightenings. Conditions like this will continue through the night. Thanks for reporting!

Excellent capture! Expect fast auroral brightenings like this to continue sporadically through the evening. This coronal hole is very structured so fast wind will continue to ramp up and down a bit. This often causes frequent, if short-lived substorms. Thanks for reporting!

@TamithaSkov We just had a nice 7min show here at the northern shores of the Netherlands with lots of beamers visible to the naked eye!
