The times I have explained this over and over again, but for the hard of hearing : If I have a farm owned by my family for 300 years, we aren’t putting a value on it. We are custodians of the land for future generations . London and City valuers put a value on my farm at £2m. So what. It’s not for sale. Last year after paying all outgoings and staff I made a net 100k out of which I pay usual outgoings and tax on my farmhouse. What if I die ? My net pay was 100k and I spent all of it except my pension. The inheritance tax bill is based on a value of £2m put on by London valuers. My children can’t pay it. What do they do ? Sell off fields to pay it. Who buys them ?? Hedge funds and no one knows who owns them. What if my farm becomes no longer viable after selling off fields to pay inheritance tax ? Your whole farm is unviable and you need to sell all of it, But what if the hedge funds just seek subsidies for rewilding and don’t farm the land. Well that means no farming , no food for the UK. I worked in business for 35 years and know exactly what you mean. My eldest lad got a job in London last year at a tech firm where they’d taken on about 10 the previous year . After the NI increase , he was the only one taken on the next year. They think Labour changes are great but they cost jobs. None of them have ever worked for a business.
