Doubles down even after being proven wrong. ​When a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled over driver Kathleen "Katie" Thomas during a distracted driving sting in Lake Worth Beach, Florida, he thought he had an open-and-shut case. ​Instead, it turned into one of the most baffling and viral bodycam exchanges caught on camera. The deputy approaches the window and confidently states that he witnessed Katie driving past him while holding and manipulating a cell phone with her right hand. Katie is an adaptive athlete who was born with a limb difference—she does not have a right hand. ​When she points out her arm to prove the physical impossibility of his claim, the deputy completely refuses to back down. He actually asks her to put her "hand to God" to swear she wasn't using a device. When she raises her right arm, he doubles down with, "The other hand to God." ​Despite the obvious flaw in his observation, the deputy still writes her a $116 citation for operating a wireless communications device. To make matters worse, legal analysts later pointed out that under Florida law, simply holding a phone while driving isn't even illegal unless you are in a school crossing, school zone, or active work zone—none of which applied here.
