Rationalists and EAs support liars and criminals who raise money for "art projects" or to do good things, and then spend it harassing people and actively doing bad. I will continue saying this until they publicly confess to everything they did for this game. Quietly telling me or hinting isn't enough. I don't know what the stated purpose of the money is. Maybe it's "building rationality skills" or some bullshit. But they've given people hundreds of thousands of dollars, some of them told me "I was unconsensually sent to a psych ward"(it's probably a room labeled "psych ward" and people are supposed to laugh about it, but they've also denied there's a game so we must interpret it literally), they're willing to commit crimes, and nobody is acknowledging any part of it. They blow me off with "Mira isn't it productive to move on and forget about it"?. And no: If rationalists don't think they did anything bad, and raised money to do something bad, and plan to do more things like this in the future, and haven't given any public clear signal that such plans have changed, then it's actually more important than anything I'm doing because "hundreds of people, millions of dollars" vs. "1 person".

EAs and rationalists play "hyperstitioning" games every year where they manufacture stories and lie to people and commit crimes(they broke into my Apple and Discord accounts and streamed an audio feed to their bot swarm; and they stole my roommate's id). Whenever I see drama, I assume they're doing it for attention. Did somebody really throw a Molotov Cocktail at Sam Altman's house earlier this year? Well, last year as part of their ARG there was a "work with local police to turn in the guy that was threatening to blow up Sam Altman's car with C4 explosives". I didn't buy it, so the guy made increasingly crazy claims, and eventually the rationalists had the local Seattle police call me and say they're tracking him as a "possible threat to the state". He writes me letters from an ICE detention center(he gave me the name of his judge) likening himself to Hitler. Now, when I say "manufactured story", I don't mean that it's false. Probably if I scheduled a visit to that jail, he'd be there. I mean that it's "manufactured". Did an OpenAI agent hack HuggingFace? Well, in order for it to not be a crime, HuggingFace would've had to consent. I think there was an "open source AI" cluster of people including EleutherAI, Nous Research, and HuggingFace that were aware of this ARG. And they're willing to involve the police. So maybe that did happen, and maybe the logs will corroborate it. But maybe it's another manufactured story. These are "heavy" compared to just overreacting on Twitter. I also think EAs and rationalists create fake drama on Twitter in order to get attention. I don't know if it's related, but I have a very low opinion of EAs and rationalists after their hyperstitioning games, and lying to the public by pretending to take a meme seriously so everyone thinks you're a "Karen" might be some test of propaganda or something. There's a good argument to be made that it would be expensive and not make any sense to do random legally-risky shit. But here's a letter rationalist Hitler sent me from jail. He sent me the name of his judge. They showed me records in government databases that were fake/AI-generated as part of their propaganda testing. And people on X know about this game and are instructed not to confirm or deny anything. And if you press them, they'll just lie and say nothing is happening. I have a cryptographically signed email from a police detective who called him a "threat to the state"(over the phone). So even if you don't know why, the rationalists are spending active effort to trick you and manufacture stories and lie to you. Don't assume drama is just some in-fight - they might be manufacturing stories and you shouldn't assume out of politeness that it's innocent. I thought this game might be some kind of cross-industry thing: Marc Andreessen was funding some people I suspect were involved, there's cryptocurrency money, lots of people participating in the lying have received $50k or $100k (they tried to give me $100k in 2024, which I declined. But then they got offended I wouldn't take their money and did things anyways) AI companies seemed to be playing. Eleuther, Nous Research, and HuggingFace aren't "rationalists". But I do think the organizers are rationalist/EA-affiliated. OpenAI was caught making fake accounts for propaganda. JonathanDoomer and DoomersAreDumb. Don't assume it's an isolated incident. If a political advocate is being a "Karen", the culture of rationalists and AI companies is so toxic that you shouldn't assume it's an innocent mistake. This person might be literally paid by someone who professionally lies to you in order to make AI safety look bad. He also is more likely to be real, since he's connected - but you shouldn't just take his apparent mistake at face value. Rationalists, AI companies, EAs, are all manufacturing stories and lying to you. There's too much money at stake, and too much "AI will kill us all" at stake, for there to not be a propaganda war. I have considered "well if some people are making 'doomers' look bad, and you have a negative opinion of them, maybe you fell for the false flag?", but even so I think rationalists and EAs knowingly participate. Because of these hyperstioning games, I no longer believe that MIRI or Eliezer or rationalists or EAs or other LessWrong people care strongly about the truth. In this game, people try to avoid obvious lies, but they lie if pressed, and "assisting in manufacturing a story" isn't lying and I think they feel clever when they pull it off.

I challenge roon to a public debate on AI safety, he is wrong and needs to be shown how wrong he is. He will not accept this invitation, the excuse is either I'm too rude (I'll play nice this time, because I actually respect roon) or I'm too insignificant (us lowby accounts can't get no respect in this attention economy). I presume you'll ignore this, @tszzl?

@martianwyrdlord When has a company ever done something for nothing? Much less out of "Principle?" The real problem is that Copyright will continue to be a hurdle for anyone wanting to appropriate knowledge, including rival AI's. Also Copyright shouldn't end because a work no longer exists.

Anthropic is getting hate for this, but it's ultimately an outcome of the same disconnect between copyright law and technology that's been hobbling the Internet for 25 years. Digital telecommunications drops the marginal cost of replication and distribution of the information contained in a book, or any other media, to zero. Google Books was originally intended as an online Library of Alexandria that would provide access to every book ever written. The publishing industry saw that as a threat, and used copyright to shut that down, as a result of which Google Books is effectively useless. LLMs are essentially knowledge machines that can digest the entire corpus of human knowledge, rendering it legible and interrogable in ways that no other library does. That's very useful, but it requires, by definition, vast quantities of training data. The best training data is not Reddit posts, but books, because that's where the knowledge is. Anthropic is destroying, instead of just scanning, the books for essentially the same reason that Google locked down Google Books. Since the original no longer exists, only one copy remains, and the rights attached to purchase of the original copy transfer to the digital copy. It would cost Anthropic nothing, in principle, to make its digital library freely available to everyone, but they'd get sued into bankruptcy by the publishing industry. Meanwhile, you can go on Amazon and regularly find used copies of out of print books from even just a couple decades ago going for hundreds of dollars. The publishing industry keeps the vast majority of its back catalogue in the vault, with no intention of making it available for sale. And, ok, it isn't necessarily profitable to reprint an old book everyone has forgotten. That's fine, printing is expensive, but keeping the information itself hidden is criminally insane.
Hedgie@HedgieMarkets

🦔AI companies are bulk-buying rare books, scanning them through high-speed machines that cut the spines off, and shredding the originals. A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world." My Take This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email. ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation." I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate. "We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline. Hedgie🤗

@CoreyLeander @Unlearned_Hand I agree that teaching the Bible and *not* giving a similar treatment to other religions, traditions and worldviews is not an appropriate choice for a secular school; it is privileging one account (and one that happens to be untrue).

I know you're all aggravated by Holly's recent comments, but let me play Devil's advocate here: she's one of the very few persons I know who engages in AI risk, has a high p(doom) and behaves how I'd expect any non crazy human to behave given those premises. I am permanently flabbergasted by people who allegedly have high p(dooms) and keep acting 'business as usual' and working on AI companies, and any of the usual arguments fail to persuade me that either they are a)insincere or b)suicidally crazy.

One reason you can tell AI safety doesn't actually matter to anyone: they still refuse to let their models say true but politically unpopular things. You can't claim to be working on behalf of all humanity when you also indulge in the prejudices of a small minority of westerners.

There are just a lot of characters in anime (yes it is) who are supposed to be "Asian" (though I'd quibble that the races in Avatar are fully diegetic) who simply can't be played by Asian actors. They have to be cast as white because that's what they were drawn to look like.
