The Senate gave a dinner to honor President Ronald Reagan at the Washington Hilton. This was the first time he would revisit the Hilton since his assassination attempt by John Hinkley Jr. I was staying at the Hilton at that time and in and out of the Hilton and never once questioned by Secret Service. We were able to enter the ballroom after Reagan’s speech and walk around the after dinner dance with complete freedom. That venue should never be used for high level affairs. Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night's shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy. It’s also a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service Agents show every day. I’m grateful to them – and thankful that the agent who was shot is going to be okay.
