My own experience: - 8+ years of experience working in R1 research and PhD program admin @ CMU and Pitt -directly with many wonderful (and a few annoying) Chinese colleagues —here on various visas and exchange programs between US and China for science and education and cultural exchange - Was that it was: 1. An excellent encounter between our two cultures 2. The students - from both countries - are often quite guarded with one another even after a couple years in the same cohort (this is somewhat true of all budding scientists, however! 3. Generative of incredible scientific discovery. @OpenAI would never have been able to achieve @ChatGPTapp moment without decades of international collaboration, including… 4. Very much at Carnegie Mellon specifically vis a vis machine learning! Funnily enough, when I tried to take a break to go do some “leadership analysis of the wonderful East for a certain US department”, I had no issues getting my TS-SCI (yep, that one) despite the major pain in the ass of going through my Facebook account at the time and trying to come up with the contact information for like…150+ internationals I had to disclose? I’m quite concerned about the United States losing its status as a beacon of free thought and scientific inquiry and technological innovation. It occurs to me that I have many colleagues chomping at the bit to do a bit of a panel debate on this topic. Instead of spending all this time talking about the Boogeyman, you could stop being such a coward and talk TO the Boogeyman in public! Let me know if you’d be interested in having someone there to defend the Administration’s science diplomacy policy, if such a thing can even be said to exist in a cohesive manner under this government.

This article completely ignores the established fact that Chinese intelligence targets US students studying in China. There are good reasons why it's difficult to get a Top Secret clearance after studying in China away from those programs with US professors.
