VRA was written to CORRECT racial gerrymandering: the act of forcing black voters into white conservative districts. Southern states couldn't be trusted to ensure black representation. And as witnessed today from Landry, Blackburn, et al, Congress was right in 1965 to do so.

Today's Supreme Court decision reverses hard-won progress under the Voting Rights Act. It means less representation for millions of Black Americans and other voters of color, as lawmakers gain greater ability to manipulate their districts. There will be more extreme partisan gerrymandering, lopsided elections, less accountable government, and policies that hurt rather than help with everyday life. But this is no time to be demoralized, because we know it does not have to be this way. We can mobilize around reform, new laws, and where necessary, constitutional amendments for fairer government. Only then can we feel the benefits of a balanced Court, a truly representative Congress, and an election system free from the distorting power of extreme corporate and partisan manipulation.

Historically, the Supreme Court was a place where you went to expand, to include, and to lift up. Now, the Court often turns back the hands of progress. The ruling in Louisiana v. Callais is tragic, but it's not the end of the story. We must not give up, give out, or give in.

John Lewis was beaten with clubs wrapped in barbed wire on the Edmund Pettus Bridge fighting for voting rights. Today’s SCOTUS decision takes the sacrifice and fight of all who marched before us and throws it away. We must keep marching — too many have fought too hard to give up.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling guts the Voting Rights Act and turns back the clock on the foundational promise of equality and fairness in our election systems. Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act was one of the last remaining federal protections for Black and brown voters against maps deliberately drawn to dilute their political power. That protection has been stripped away. It is an outrage. But it is not a surprise. It is part of an agenda that conservatives set in place decades ago to steal power from everyday people and then cling to that power for generations. The court’s decision is motivated by politics and designed to give an upper hand to Donald Trump’s Republican Party, which faces the threat of losing the upcoming midterm elections. We must pay attention to what happens next. The fight now returns to the states. Legislatures — particularly those in the South — will rush to redraw districts before voting for the midterms begins in just a few months. Already, Louisiana and Florida are planning to redraw their maps, and we should not be surprised if others rapidly follow suit ahead of the midterms and 2028. Their politically-motivated power grab is meant to protect elected Republicans from any consequences for their failure to make groceries, gas, health care, or housing more affordable for you and your family. They want to cheat and choose their voters, instead of the voters deciding who they choose. The mission before us is to restore the power of the people. There is no question our fight became harder today, but I know we are up for the battle.

Today’s Supreme Court decision in Louisiana vs. Callais is a direct attack on Black voters and marks a shameful moment in our democracy. This ruling opens the door to racial gerrymandering that will take us back to Jim Crow. This ruling is a betrayal of Black voters and the promise of democracy. Trump’s Supreme Court has gutted the protections that Dr. King marched for. The protections made possible by civil rights protestors who spilled blood in pursuit of a more perfect union. This is a devastating and profound step backwards for American Democracy.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling further weakens a law born out of sacrifice, struggle, and the determination of people who risked everything for the right to vote. Voting rights remain essential to justice, representation, and the dignity of citizenship. This decision certainly weakens key protections and sets up a path that could make fair representation even more difficult. This is a critical election year, and it is also a critical moment to call for new voting rights legislation. Through Kingian Nonviolence, we can organize, strategize, and coordinate our efforts to combat voter suppression and create a pathway to restore and protect representation. Register. Verify your status. Make a plan to vote. Help others do the same.
