Pub discovery of the week - The Pocket in Islington. Off north end of Upper Street. Not always mad on new tap rooms in old shop premises but this one is a gem. Brilliantly put together, nice crowd, winning drinks selection (and cheapish for the area). Excellent

Children (and elderly people) are confined to poorly connected suburbs that are considered better for ‘families’, but they’re dependent on lifts to socialise. It’s depressing. We should be building cities that enable the autonomy and freedom that comes with not needing to drive.
Alicia, Courtyard Urbanist@UrbanCourtyard

What kind of built environment actually supports early childhood and adolescent autonomy? @LetGrowOrg @FreeRangeKids @JonHaidt Not the one we’ve spent the last century building. In the city, kids who are younger than ~8-10 would benefit from a shared courtyard on their block, where they can have unsupervised play with neighbor kids while still under the care of an adult Kids older than ~8-10 would benefit from fine-grain streets, slower streets, wider sidewalks, more parks and piazzas, etc.

The anglosphere is resistant to desirable and accessible European city-building. You can have a 40 storey box or antisocial suburban sprawl. We need gentle density, 3-bed flats, generous terraces, shared courtyard gardens, pocket parks, de-trafficking, denser school typologies…
Aaron Bastani@AaronBastani

Extraordinary article. London’s population grew by 543k 2014-2024, but its population of under 9s fell 107k. This isn’t just about fertility rates. We are building cities for nimby boomers, investors & affluent young professionals. Not families. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/ac…

@tenaglia_john @DannyDrinksWine Is this true? I feel common consensus is that he’s definitely in the small group of greatest and most important filmmakers.

Tarkovsky = Kubrick. They both made a limited number of feature films, all of them masterpieces. Tarkovsky should be more frequently named in the circle of the greatest filmmaker of all time. He’s simply not because he was Russian and extremely spiritual. And very difficult to understand. But you rarely see his name amongst the top 25 filmmakers of all time. He’s definitely in that number. My thesis was on his works.

@willnorman Why so unambitious? Why not the whole of Oxford street as a minimum and then most of Soho. The only way to create a civilised city is to remove all cars.

This entire announcement feels like an incredible amount of heavy lifting to try and justify the decision. You should not need to be giving reasons on why you’re appointing a manager like this
Nottingham Forest@NFFC

Nottingham Forest is delighted to confirm the appointment of Sean Dyche as the Club’s new Head Coach, following a thorough recruitment process led by Global Head of Football, Edu Gaspar, and Global Technical Director, George Syrianos. The former Forest youth player joins the Club on a contract running until the summer of 2027 and will take charge of his first match on Thursday night as The Reds take on FC Porto in the Europa League. Dyche will be joined by his experienced coaching team of Ian Woan and Steve Stone — both former Nottingham Forest players who together made more than 400 appearances for the Reds during the 1990s. A respected and experienced Premier League manager, Dyche brings the perfect blend of character, tactical acumen and proven achievement to guide the Club through its next chapter. Having managed more than 330 Premier League matches in his career to date, Dyche has built teams defined by defensive organisation, resilience, and strength from set pieces —qualities that align closely with the current squad’s attributes and the Club’s footballing identity. As a former Forest youth player who lives locally, Dyche also has a deep understanding of the values and pride of Forest and its supporters. With his character, tactical acumen and man-management skills, his appointment represents the best opportunity for a successful and competitive season across both domestic and European competitions.

So sad to say goodbye to @SimplyFineFood This ends a line of fishmongers on these premises stretching back half a century. (And the high street loses a first-class retailer - meat and produce as well as fish.) The new business will be a café; owners hope to open before Christmas.
