@justinarchie @ArmandDoma Also, the home ownership rate in the US is around 65%. So objectively most Americans do own their homes!

the funny thing is that the sort of large scale market rate apartment construction that reduces Chinese homelessness is something people with this poster’s ideology rage against day in and day out

@Fwedpeng @lili_pl @jgschraiber @vanillaopinions $107 or £107? Either way, I believe it. Most Americans don’t realize how spoiled we are when even our “high” gas prices peaked around $5/gallon and that was an extreme anomaly for most people.

@Philanders @Workin_Prog @AlexGodofsky I guess they could theoretically set up some sort of listening post on it? But that would imply the military is just blissfully unaware of any foreign-owned land adjacent to their bases. There’s no way they don’t keep an eye on those sort of things.

@Workin_Prog @AlexGodofsky I get that this is weird, but is the idea that the Chinese will be able to somehow freely spy on our military bases because they "own" the farmland? I'm genuinely confused by this.

what really frightens me is the idea that, if there were a war, China would take all of that farmland and move it to other side of the Pacific and then we wouldn't be able to grow any food

@ThosVarley @arise_america @OldHollowTree So is lack of medical care. My grandparents lived in one of those small towns, and when my grandfather got cancer they’d have to drive ~3 hours round trip multiple times a week for all his specialist appointments.

@arise_america @OldHollowTree Lack of good public schools is an issue, even for people w/ WFH jobs. I hear that a lot from people in my age group who are thinking about where to raise their kids.

Nobody likes hearing this, but Gen Z has the opportunity to pull off the greatest small town revival in American history. The millennials fled their hometowns in droves, leaving a vacuum. Now look at any town under 25k pop. and find a craftsman home for about $100k.

@WILLxORxBILLY @mattyglesias Also German companies (aside from maybe VW) position themselves as luxury brands in the US market, and as Ford/Lincoln learned from the failure of the Mark LT, luxury-badged trucks don’t sell well.

@mattyglesias the pickup truck drivers in the US especially are highly loyal to a few brands. Germany was late to this market and probably saw penetrating the market as more costly (ad spend, R&D, etc) than beneficial

If Democrats are the “pro-war” party does that make Republicans the super-pro-war party? There are valid criticisms of US foreign policy under Democratic administrations, but I truly don’t believe anyone can say with a straight face that Democrats are *more* “pro-war”.

@Cesar14814000 @ramit @gmarquezp_ You don’t need to be a savvy investor to contribute to a 401k or open an IRA and invest in index funds, though.

@SteveIsser @jeff82874662 I’m more surprised that a 2500sq ft home is only 2bed/2bath, my apartment is less than half that size with the same. Though I do agree with your point. But I wonder how much is chicken-vs-egg; how many people are even building 1200sq ft homes today?

@jeff82874662 Notice he's using a 2500 sq ft home as an example. Back in 1996, my first home was 1200 sq ft in a working class neighborhood. Maybe people need to re-adjust their concept of what a middle class lifestyle was 30-40 years ago.

It is kind of funny that basically all the modern angst over being worse off than prior generations boils down to “we don’t build enough houses so they’re really expensive”
Josiah Lippincott@jlippincott_

Chris, in Hillsdale the Assistant Manager position at the Wendy's pays about $18 an hour. Over a year, that averages out to $37,440. This is a screen shot of a random selection of homes for sale on Zillow in Hillsdale. Let's say he tries to buy that 2500 sq. ft. home for $215k. If he puts down a 10% down payment ($21,500) the monthly payment would be $1800 a month. That is 60% of his PRE-TAX monthly paycheck. There is simply no way that an assistant manager in Hillsdale is ever going to afford a mortgage for a nice family home in Hillsdale, much less save up for the down payment. It just isn't going to happen. Hell, if this guy made a $70k salary, he would be hard pressed to pay for that house without his spouse working. That's why virtually everyone my age I know who bought a house did so with family help or inheritance money. And, by the way, what does it mean for both spouses to be working? It means paying for child care, managing a daycare schedule, and both spouses coming home at the end of the day to care for the home and children. It is a heavy burden on both parents. It also means that your children get to be raised and educated by strangers unless you can get a babysitter in the home. And, btw, all of this is happening as crime, homelessness, and infrastructure disintegration is accelerating. In Hillsdale, the city is so strapped for cash that if they pave the road in front of your house you as the homeowner get slammed with a $5,000 "special assessment" for the privilege of having a driveable road. This is what downward mobility looks like. This is what a crisis of legitimacy looks like. This is the world confronting young people today.
