I’ve become convinced that the left needs to make the betterment of civil society, culture, art, sports, etc a real priority, and not just on the context of taking on capital. To build social trust and a happier America we need to invest in things that give us joy and community.

NEW: Youth sports is now costing parents as much as $25,000 a year. Private equity and corporations are turning a childhood pastime into something only the wealthy can afford. Youth sports has become a $40 billion industry, and the steep costs are crushing American families.

So there’s this super rich neighborhood in Seattle. Laurelhurst. They are situated next to a children’s hospital. They decided that the helicopter sound is too loud for them. The helicopters that life flight critically injured children to the hospital. So if a child needs to be taken by helicopter, the pilot has to land a mile away from the hospital. An ambulance will be there to take the child the remaining distance. This is to ensure that the super rich people don’t have to hear helicopters.

What I love about the Apple TV broadcasts is the realism. Like how the "Shot on iPhone" on-field angles actually look like if someone shot a broadcast on an iphone, in that it kinda looks like shit and is definitely worse than the regular on-field cameras local networks use

before we socialize/communize internet infrastructure, a first step that ties in discourse on having to sign in all the time, AI, data centers, climate, surveillance data, etc, is some kind of Internet Jubilee, where so much of this bloat is wiped and we can be freer users

@EricNewcomer @eriktorenberg Reality is reality and will always be so, though even in your point — centering your analysis around how media should operate in response, and even calling reality “IRL” — shows the logic of the spectacle is still dictating your disagreement.

Just read @eriktorenberg arguing that The Internet Is Real Life. My take: the internet drives the narrative but treating that as the whole of reality is how you fall into the abyss. Torenberg has a strong argument. Zohran Mamdani is shaping reality by putting out a video clip far more than trying to assemble a press conference. ICE's brutality is real and present when it's on video — not whenever statistics reveal that there's maximum violence. On the other hand, much of real life is still decided in small, offline rooms. Trump situation room meetings, board rooms, etc. And our best moments as human beings — spending time with a child, relaxing on a lake — happen offline. The narrative, the situation, our shared sense of what's happening is online. But fulfilling, true experiences and real exercises of power are often offline. The media (whether elite or "new") is always managing a balancing act between what consumers want to hear about and what they *should* hear about. The argument that internet is real life translates into an embrace of that nihilism of giving the consumer exactly what they want, of not worrying about crosschecking the reality the internet wants to believe with the tangible and real. The hard work is pushing against what people are inclined to believe. I'd say that the old school media these days is often too online with reporters reading tweets instead of talking to people getting novel information. What happens in the real world decides our physical reality, our key life experiences. Are the people who tell you that the world is online ascetics or are they leading great lives in the physical world they don't tell you about, enticing you into a life they wouldn't want for themselves? a16z certainly makes many of its decisions off the public internet. are they going to start live streaming their decisions or only the versions they want you to see online. High-quality media requires a deep engagement with offline to bring online those things that people don't want to offer as their online self-presentation (or don't think to offer). It's easier to create the reality you want online than to do it in the real world. But the best media will always try to point you toward what's really happening and to a satisfying real life, both of which require heavy engagement with IRL.

The IRL connection economy is a $400B+ market. And companies are racing to own it. In the last 6 months, $800M+ in capital was deployed on "IRL" bets. @Tinder invested $60M into a new Events feature for connecting matches in-person. They're pivoting to IRL and offering experiences such as speakeasies, raves, and pottery classes. @222place: raised a $10.1M Series A to curate blind social experiences for Gen Z. Personality-matched groups sent to hyperlocal nightlife events. @JagermeisterUSA launched BestNightsVC - the only venture fund in the world dedicated solely to nightlife and IRL connection. 16 portfolio companies across 4 continents. @timeleft: dinner with 5 strangers, every Wednesday. €18M ARR. 6,500 dinners/week across 200+ cities. Dion: members-only social app where the first move is buying someone a real drink, redeemed IRL. 10K members, 30K+ on the waitlist founded by @revekkapal. Pie: Bonobos founder @dunn built an IRL friendship app. $24M raised. 130K+ MAU. @weroad_official: group trips for 20-30 year olds who don't know each other beforehand. $150M valuation. Matchbox: is an algorithm-powered matching platform for IRL events and has powered over 100,000 connections. founded by @liamjmcgregor (prev @MarriagePact) New dating apps like Known @Celesteamadon, Cerca @MylesCerca, and Ditto @AllenWangzian are aiming to improve connection amongst young people. Billion-dollar companies are paying $$$ for community and events leads: - @AnthropicAI: Marketing Events Manager ($255k) - @tryramp: Community Manager ($223k) - @tryramp: Events & Culture Manager ($181k) - @duolingo: Senior Community Manager ($193k) - @NotionHQ: Community Programs Lead Everyone knows the more time we spend online, the more valuable real-life connection becomes. The question isn't whether IRL wins. It's who facilitates it best.

💢 Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner on U.S. support for Israel: “Not a single taxpayer dollar should be spent on arming and defending a country that commits a genocide. I would absolutely support Senator Sanders' bill to restrict military aid, but I'll be entirely honest, looking down the road, this is a nation that right now is exterminating people. It is going to be very difficult for me to ever be able to look at them again and see someone that we should be working with closely… What I am witnessing now is the height of horror. And the fact that it is being done by bombs that are built in this country and paid for with our tax dollars is utterly unconscionable. And it needs to end.” Clip via @MarcoFoster_

A worker in Ontario, California sets his company’s warehouse on fire and has a message for the CEO: “There goes your inventory. All you had to do was pay us enough to fucking live.” Expect to see more of this as people struggle to survive under our decaying capitalist system.
