never in my life did i think making a quick video about copper clad aluminum fucking cabling would make so many men angry at me. this has got to be in my top 5 unintentionally rage inducing posts of all time

@gunbunny15 no specific brands (there are tons), but keep in the lookout for super cheap wire. look for specific labeling that says ‘CCA’. they will call it CAT-whatever & claim it’s TIA compliant, but if it’s labeled CCA, those are lies.

@TracketPacer Copper clad aluminum. It will work fine for short runs that don't need poe+, but not what you should use by default.

@obwielnls i use the term ‘ethernet cable’ specifically to draw in beginners/non-super-techy folks. unfortunately it is punchier than ‘twisted pair cable’. nobody outside of tech really knows what that is

@TracketPacer will the CCA itself fail faster in a fire, sure I guess. do I care if my ethernet wire survives a fire? no, no I do not.

so first of all, you can read all about the signal degradation & safety risks by googling this or looking at fluke networks’ write ups. also, have you heard of fire codes? if your building catches fire for any reason, clearly CCA cables will worsen the issue. this is why they’re illegal to install. skin effect is moot here. again, easily googleable. POE will cause heat which will lead to quick degradation of aluminum wire. once again—against spec for a reason. fire hazard. and overall signal degradation regardless.

nice, okay, but do you plan run your ethernet at some unimaginably high current flow or will you regulary set in fire your walls? ... CCA surface good for SUHF skin-effect, but thanks for real Cu wire and proper Si insulation test - good to now for some creative power delivery abuse :-)

glad you enjoy it! they are usually marked as both CCA as well as CAT5e/CAT6+ & the jackets will be printed with claims of ANSI/EIA/TIA compliance. but none of those other things can be true if it is CCA. so my rec is to just look carefully at what you’re purchasing & never buy anything labeled CCA
