Can someone smarter than me explain how these “turbo mode” things work on like an implementation level? Are they using better GPUs? More GPUs? Reserved allocation during generation?

@chhopsky Sometimes that is okay, sometimes it's even good. but not ALLL the time. knee-jerk distrust isn't "skepticism".

@chhopsky Likewise if you constantly distrust any distilled information you didn't derive from first-principals yourself, you're opting into learning every possible hard lesson yourself. Or not learning and just suffering in ignorance forever.

transparency isn't a goal, it's a communication technique the goal is for users to be fully informed. transparency attempts this by allowing user questions to be self-served with published info if users see the info and make incorrect conclusions then it isn't working
CSAURAGEUL@csaurageul

"One of the big problems in gaming right now is that there is too much transparency for the consumer, and we can't lie to our investors as much, this is a problem that needs to be fixed" ever noticed how this never seems to affect games that are actually good

@readwithai @ChadNotChud @robertskmiles It actually enables you to do more stuff, such as being able to cheaply and reliably solve problems in finite timeframe on finite hardware, both of which are real-world constraints and something that Turing Machines and algorithms designed for them cannot meet.

The burning for hours and moving across compartments when those ships are designed to isolate problems is what makes me think this was an inside job. There is a chance I wrong but our most advanced warship was almost taken down by what they say was a small fire. I wasn’t in the navy so my understanding is limited but seems like malicious intent by the crew

Following last week’s laundry room fire onboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), which extended into several berthings, the U.S. Navy was forced to take 1,000 mattresses off the future USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) in Norfolk, Virginia over the weekend to send to the Ford, sources tell USNI News. In addition, the Navy has also collected almost 2,000 sweatsuits and other clothing items to distribute to the crew because many sailors are unable to clean their clothes with most of the laundry services out of commission, as the tired ship heads for Souda Naval Base in Crete.

@dystopiangf It's a problem insofar as it's just a more extreme form of the sickness that influencer culture already is.

Whenever there is some new AI alternative to something, we should ask ourselves, “What is it that we’re losing?” If the answer is “influencer culture,” then good riddance. This actually isn’t a problem

This sort of thing is shocking until you realize that there isn’t much of a distinction between “flesh influencer” and “AI influencer.” To the audience that consumes this content, a flesh influencer is practically just as unreal as a fully generated one. They will never meet either version; the flesh influencer is just as virtual / intangible. Her curated & filtered experiences are also nearly just as fake. We don’t seem to realize how virtual & abstract & fake our experiences of other people already are. The fact that men follow this AI girl is just as shocking as the fact that men would follow a real girl who posts like this — which is to say, it isn’t shocking at all, since it isn’t really a fundamentally different type of thing
Justine Moore@venturetwins

It takes a lot to shock me online. But I’m genuinely floored by how many dudes are following influencers that are clearly AI.

In America, doctor say you need to walk more. But if you routinely walk more than 2 blocks, you become "that guy" and everyone in your town starts recognizing you and assuming you're a brokie with a DUI and probably also a sex pest. To avoid this fate, you have to get a dog. Which means on your long walks you will be holding a plastic bag full of shit half the time. The final option is a treadmill, at which point your mental enslavement to Netflix or cable news is completely consummated with no hope of emancipation

The very end of JP7 fuel. The special fuel was made just for an SR-71. The end of the program, the last drop of JP7 This very last fuel-burning event occurred on the evening of Thursday, Sept.12, 2002. They were ordered to get rid of the rest of the JP7 SR 71 fuel, so it was agreed…. Let’s burn it.! To experience a J58 in full burner close-up and personal is hard to describe. Picture a gigantic blow torch, 40 inches in diameter, putting out a blue-yellow-orange flame over 50 feet long. Imagine standing 30 feet from this, feeling the vibration and heat. You wear foam plugs and earmuffs. Afterward, your ears still ring because the sound is conducted through your body. The back half of the engine transforms from dull gray to bright orange, seemingly transparent. The flame was a three-dimensional diamond-shaped shock pattern about every two feet. 💎💎💎 This flame is both frightening and beautiful, an amazing demonstration of perfectly controlled power. And to think - this was done with 1950s technology Tony Landis's photo

@TracketPacer @BenignVanilla so what's the actual problem? is the water changing or increasing coupling between the pairs? Is it directly affecting the performance of the cable? or just "obviously a bad thing thatwill lead to degradation and eventual corrosion over time" ?

@LinusMinimax @Cmdr_Hadfield An atmosphere to "push against" makes the rocket LESS efficient generally, not more so. the greater the pressure difference between "inside" and "outside", the more thrust you get. thinks like nozzle shape influence this etc.

@LinusMinimax @Cmdr_Hadfield "pressure" is what we call "millions of gas molecules energetically banging against the walls". they push in all directions all the time. if it's enclosed, net force is zero. If there's not a wall to the right, they're pushing left, but not right, so net force to the left.

How do rockets work? Sometimes I teach at university, and everybody likes a live demo. A fire extinguisher is just a small rocket nozzle; a chair & cart make a good spaceship. Folks ask how it works in space with no air to push against? But it's the mass blasting out that makes me roll. Doesn't need any backstop. Newton's 2nd law. But always good to have a landing plan - thanks @UWaterloo students!

@oblix78 @TracketPacer if you can't resolve the name, it's dns. if the name resolves but you can't get there anyway, it's your firewall. BGP is innocent and would never do something like this.

@TracketPacer Often play the game of "is it DNS or BGP" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 In all seriousness though, is it possible to determine if BGP is the root cause? DNS is well known about, but BGP is a dark art.
