Christian-Calvinist Adjacent? Time will tell. Father, husband, business owner. I like to argue, but would prefer to learn to like to debate. Cook a mean steak.

@travis_fooks My PE teacher in middle school occasionally wore a wrestling singlet over a t-shirt. So I guess that doesn’t pass the mustard.

"I still don't know if I align with your idea that acknowledging someone's consistent bent towards struggling with SSA is equivalent to affirming the desire is not sinful" I agree. Now, I am not saying that Chris in particular is saying this, but every time a story like this breaks, I spend a few days watching this very suggestion on X. The suggestion that this disordered desire is somehow MORE disordered than our own disordered desires. As Chris said, we ALL have besetting sins. If you say you dont, then its probably pride. I see no particular scriptural evidence that God hates this particular sin MORE than He does others. Some will suggest that the penalties for certain sins being harsher than others is said evidence, but those penalties seem to me to be less because God hates them more and more because in His mercy He understands that some sins are more socially destructive than others and has prescribed these punishments for OUR benefit. Otherwise, someone would have to explain to me how an absolutely Holy God views certain sins against His holiness with anything less than absolute hatred. So yes, I would agree with you that struggling against this particular sin is no more affirming that it is not sinful than is struggling against whatever our own besetting sin(s) is/are. In fact, why would you even be struggling at all if you did NOT think that it was sinful?

Sadly, this is not at all surprising, especially for those who warned about Alberry and Revoice for years. The ideology that disordered desires were not inherently sinful is the crack in the door that allows someone not to repent of the sinfulness of their heart. To treat "same sex attraction" as an orientation that is fine to have, provided it is not acted on, is antithetical to the holiness demanded of us in Scripture. The only surprising part of this is the language of “currently disqualified,” in the church's public statement, as opposed to permanently disqualified. Let's be real, the man was engaged in a homosexual relationship and lied about certain aspects of it. That certainly fails the “above reproach” standard of Scripture. Unless this church and those who have been swayed by the Revoice ideology come to recognize this, then this will not be the last time this happens. Alberry should absolutely be held accountable, and he should be guided through a disciplinary process that includes full repentance of his acts and desires. We should desire to see him restored, not as a pastor, but as a member of the body of Christ. But if he should later be restored to the pastorate after years of teaching a compromised ideology and then demonstrating through his own sins the fallibility of that ideology, then this will only perpetuate the same cycle of sexual sin in others. Alberry should be seen as a cautionary tale about what happens when we try to compromise the word of God with the ideologies of the world.
Megan Basham@megbasham

There have been doctrinal issues with this church and its pastor for some time now, treating the sin of same sex attraction as a special sort of sin, which need only be half crucified. It was not necessarily clear that this was how the bad doctrine would work itself out, but it was going to show bad fruit in some way eventually.

Resume focus on who? Leia is dead, Chewy is dead, Vader's body is dead, Vader's voice is dead, Harrison Ford's nose has grown so large you almost can't see his face, Mark Hammill is insufferable. Everyone else is 80. Unless they are talking about the younger, infinitely awful actors from the prequels? How about we just stop? Let's pretend the original 3 films are it, and maybe make a case to include Rogue One, which was actually enjoyable.

@JoshuaBarzon, for everyone who is giving you grief about this suggestion, dont listen. When I was a bachelor, I lived on Arby's 5 beef & cheddar for $5, Pillsbury pizza pops, Kraft dinner and ichiban. And either Pepsi or beer (I'm not sure I drank water). I turned out fine 😁

If suicide is unforgivable, then there must be more than one unforgivable sin. Scripture only identifies one: Matthew 12: 31 "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven." Can you show me (from Scripture, not inference) that there is any single act which, if committed once, proves a person does not have the Spirit, while other sins God also hates (like lying or pride) do not?

@travis_fooks @Suhtiwdog Because we are to judge people by their fruits. And suicide is especially hopeless and joyless and is devoid of the fruit of the spirit. I think you can agree that hearing your child lied or was proud is bad but hearing they committed suicide is certainly worse.

@RevivedThoughts @Suhtiwdog Why would committing suicide be a sign that you don't have the Spirit, while lying isn't? Or lust? Pride? Slander? What in your mind is so special about suicide that it gets singled out?

@Suhtiwdog Wouldn't committing suicide be a sign that someone isn't walking in the Spirit and doesn't have the Spirit? If one has the Spirit of God but the Spirit doesn't stop them from committing suicide?

So how then does it feel knowing that God's "preference" to save your loved ones is, in the end, irrelevant? Your loved ones will be saved or condemned based on their wills. Scripture says that most people will go to hell. Scripture says that no one seeks God. How many loved ones do you have that are unbelievers? How old are they? If they have already spent most of their lives, of their own free wills, being unbelievers, why would you think they will change? What argument could you give to convince them that you haven't already? Do you pray for their salvation? Why? God cant override their free will. Or, do you subconsciously hold to the notion that He will perhaps convict them, or nudge them, or any of the other terms I have heard that actually mean override their free will without saying it? There is no point in asking God for help in that area. You have 2 options. Come up with a more persuasive arguement, a more relatable analogy, just a different vein of logic, and convince them into heaven. Or. Beg God to save them despite the fact that they dont deserve it, dont ever stop praying for them, and then trust Him.

@pbcmike98 I know objectively that God prefers to save my loved ones, has provided sufficient means to save my loved ones. This provides me objective grounds the Calvinist does not have. Disagreeing with an idea is not derangement syndrome.

The Calvinist has no objective assurance for his loved ones: his wife, his children, his friends, his siblings, his parents, his relatives. What if God doesn’t prefer to save any of the Calvinist’s loved ones? If God doesn’t prefer to save them, does this mean that the Calvinist loves these folks more than God does?

God has not left His will hidden in signs, impressions, or subjective experiences. He has revealed it clearly and sufficiently in His Word. “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us” (Deuteronomy 29:29). The craving for signs often exposes something deeper, a desire for direction without submission, guidance without obedience. But Christ rebuked that very spirit. “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign” (Matthew 12:39). Scripture is not a secondary option. It is the appointed means by which God directs His people. “All Scripture is God breathed… so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Nothing is lacking. God’s will is not hidden in mystical signals. It is laid before us in commands, principles, and promises. “This is the will of God, your sanctification” (1 Thessalonians 4:3).

My wife was driving from BC to Calgary. It was the middle of winter, after dark, 50km from anywhere, driving north on a secondary highway. She hit black ice, car spun and she went into the ditch. It was late, there was no traffic that she had seen for a while. Dead zone so no cell service. She got out of the car and was preparing to start walking north, and all of a sudden a guy in an old pickup truck was driving south towards her. He hasd a tow rope, pulled her out, and then drove away. North. Not the way he was driving. Where did he come from?
