In 2010, he passed selection for MARSOC — the Marine Forces Special Operations Command — and joined the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion as a Critical Skills Operator. Over the next decade, he deployed multiple times to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant, serving as a regional operations chief and leading Marine Special Operations Team 8232. He spoke three languages. He was pursuing a college degree in entrepreneurship. He was, by every measure, a man who refused to stop growing. On March 8, 2020, GySgt Pongo and Captain Moises A. Navas accompanied Iraqi security forces into the Makhmur Mountains of north-central Iraq to clear a heavily fortified ISIS tunnel complex. The joint team encountered intense, close-range enemy fire deep inside the complex. Both Pongo and Navas made the ultimate sacrifice during the engagement. Due to the remote, rugged mountain terrain, it took coalition forces six hours to recover their bodies. He was 34 years old. He served for 16 years. He is laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Scout Sniper. Marine Raider. Team Leader. Trilingual. Student. Son of Simi Valley, California. Gunnery Sergeant Diego D. Pongo wore every one of those titles with the same quiet, relentless excellence that defined everything he did. Sixteen years of service. The mountains of Iraq were the last place he ever stood.
