Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick helped fund the transport of Wells’ body to Washington, D.C., for an independent autopsy, according to civil rights attorney Ben Crump. The private autopsy determined the cause of death as “undetermined.” The forensic pathologist noted red discoloration on the back of Wells’ head and stated that damage to the throat could not be ruled out as a possible cause or contributing factor, because the relevant tissue had been removed during the initial autopsy. Crump also claimed that Wells’ body was discovered face-down and fully clothed, which contradicts photos from that day showing him wearing swimming trunks.
