The move has forced RFA to cease shortwave radio transmissions for its #Mandarin, #Tibetan, and #Lao language services entirely, while broadcasts for #Burmese, #Khmer, #Korean, and #Uyghur have been significantly scaled back. The cuts stem from the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) ending RFA’s federal grant on March 15. RFA has since furloughed most of its staff and is pursuing legal action, claiming that the funding cut violates federal law. Monitoring data confirms that transmissions via shortwave and mediumwave relay stations — which were either owned or leased by #USAGM — have stopped within the last week. This brings RFA's total broadcast hours from 63 per week in March down to just seven. The data is based on recordings from USAGM’s Remote Monitoring System, which tracks broadcast activity worldwide. Though the broadcaster has lost the majority of its radio transmission capability, it continues to publish limited news content online and through social media in all nine languages it serves. RFA, founded in 1996, was created to provide independent news to parts of Asia with limited or no press freedom, including China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Myanmar. The recent shutdown marks one of the most significant setbacks in the organization’s history. The funding cut follows a broader push by the Trump administration to reduce government spending on U.S.-funded international media organizations, including Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
