@trivet1806 They had to be dragged kicking and screaming to open Croke Park for Football and Rugby when Lansdowne Road was being redeveloped despite the tax payer having paid for most of Croke Parks .

This irritates me. For most of its history, the GAA has been deliberately exclusionary - forbidding its members the playing or watching of 'foreign' (i.e. English) sports and excluding any members of the British security or police forces. It was a direct offshoot of the republican movement and has never been particularly interested in or welcoming of interest from British people. While Britain gave its sports to the world, the Irish very deliberately kept theirs as parochial as possible. And that's fine. But don't then complain that we don't know or care much about them like that's our fault.

This whole Mayo story has properly got into my head. The fact that they’re all doing it for the love and pride of their county over any sort of financial gain is so uplifting. That’s what sport should be all about when you boil it down to its essence.

@EwanMacKenna It was a great year, but the exciting second half eclipsed the fact the first half of the final was a brutal enough spectacle.

Looking back, is that the best football championship ever? Out west, Leitrim winning a game and then rattling Galway, before Roscommon thrash Mayo and win it all in a wild ride. In the east Wicklow's heartbreak, as Westmeath fall over the line, do it again, and then fall up the steps of the Hogan. In Ulster, Donegal collapse at home, and Monaghan refuse to die until they do. And that's before the qualifiers. McGuinness has his side looking untouchable before shock. Armagh look untouchable before shock. Louth make history. Dublin come from nowhere. Kerry look untouchable after some classics. Wicklow win a Tailteann epic. And Mayo end it like that. And almost all of that was through entertaining, positive football. So I think I've answered my question. #gaa

I reckon if your county team isn't engrained in you and your identity, you don't get it. That's fine. And it's trite but, when you're from somewhere that never wins and is ridiculed, it seeps it. Head down always. There is an effect. You slump. Walk shorter. Feel less. It's why I'm delighted for Mayo people and am jealous, as just once I want to put my chin up and walk an inch taller. Well done, enjoy it, and let it seep in.

This is why Irish people live well without a great deal of success in soccer. Gaelic football is life. In 2018 visited Dublin during the football season, and it was insane the socioeconomic dimension of the game. I thought I was in Lisbon for a Benfica x Sporting or something.
