@KeyTryer A bit late to this post seeing it now, but I liked the Jorge Luis Borges references in Interstellar as well. I just saw PHM and I enjoyed it kind of like a modern Close Encounters (fittingly quoted in the movie). It also reminded me that I mean to rewatch Arrival soon

Rewatched Interstellar because the mood is right. Much better than Project Hail Mary, sorry. I know it's not a competition, and I liked PHM, but Interstellar is brimming with things to say. It's not even close.

It's great how everyone is just stupid now. People aren't just not engaging with the climate movement anymore, they're regressing on fairly simple knowledge about the climate

@trouble_man90 They did! The UNH New England polls and the FDU nationwide polls show the same thing: 90% of socialists polled in late 2024 said they would vote Harris, against ~94% of progs and libs.

from the start it was always "find me sources on this subject" even before llms had internet access, and it still is. in that way, it's far more useful than google for difficult searches or abstract queries

i wonder if anxiety about ai sycophancy goes hand in hand with that kind of learning style. those of us who fact check what even our friends tell us because we know everyone makes mistakes, never noticed, because i'd never use ai in that particular kind of way in the first place

it's peculiar. when i used to study philosophy people who only knew a basic overview would dismiss books i read as "wrong" and go no further. when i see their reading lists it seems that a lot of people read stacks of books to mostly agree with them, rather than pull them apart

I've updated my El Niño forecast plume with the latest April data (ECMWF, NMME, CFSv2, Canadian models). Its now looking like it might end up giving 2015/2016 a run for its money in terms of strength, with a peak of ~2.6C in the ENSO3.4 region by end of year.

You’ll notice that the hardcore anti-LLM crowd never wants to discuss capabilities, they are only interested in metaphysical questions about the nature and definition of intelligence itself. I believe this is intellectually lazy as it obviates a need to be responsive to reality
Jim Stewartson, Decelerationist 🇨🇦🇺🇦🇺🇸@jimstewartson

LLMs are a moderately useful software feature based on 40-year-old technology. Chatbots are never going to become intelligent, or eliminate massive numbers of jobs—unless we keep spending trillions of dollars on a dead end and destroy the economy.

The most brain-dead genre of right-wing posting. First, 1970s was the moment of New York's most serious fiscal crisis that conservatives leveraged to impose austerity on the entire country. Second, try visiting today and you will see that it is quite peaceful here.
Kevin Sorbo@ksorbs

Look at this video of NYC in 1975, see how peaceful it was? Look at how everybody seems to be enjoying their lives, and not contrast it to today. Our country has been ruined.

@ilyspica @luke_leisher_ gotta love how one corporation like Oracle can be 100 billion in debt, ice can get 85 billion in funding, a few weeks in the middle east costs 50 billion but let's complain about nasa's 25 billion dollar budget that benefits so many different sciences. it's actually pathetic

Imagine if copyright was so strong that a guy who did not even create a creature could sue someone for drawing that same creature (that they did not create) in a completely different pose that they believe they're owed that merit.
