OPEC was founded in 1960 and coordinates oil production among major exporters to help manage global supply and prices. OPEC+ is the expanded alliance created in 2016, bringing in non-OPEC producers like Russia to coordinate output decisions. The UAE was OPEC’s third-largest producer in February behind Saudi Arabia and Iraq. In its statement, the UAE said the move followed a “comprehensive review” of its production policy and future capacity and was based on its “national interest” and commitment to meeting global market demand. The announcement comes as oil markets remain under pressure amid the US-Israel-Iran conflict and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.
