We have the resources to sustain and grow real K-12 per-pupil funding. We just won't deploy them. #nced #ncpol #ncga @twslart/the-real-question-is-why-real-per-student-spending-hasnt-risen-faster-6b3e6b722038" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@twslart/the-r…

@KrisNordstrom @cprnc Rookie mistake. But it’s all a smokescreen anyway; they know they cut staffing allotments and are just hoping in any given year that temp Covid relief or increased retirement outlay will make it less obvious that they gutted schools a decade ago for their first big tax cut.

I also think it’s probably unconstitutional but at least stupid and definitely unpopular to let the shittiest busybody in your neighborhood pick what books a teenager can read. @ThePlumLineGS is right. The normal person backlash is underrated, underreported, and growing.

@jerseyjazzman @joshcowenMSU @jessgartner 1. Goal of allocation formulas (state aid formulas or district allocation to schools) is to provide resources sufficient for all children to achieve common (ideally adequate) educational outcomes.

This was a terrific event! @wileynickel was detained by Congressional duties but joined via Zoom. @HuntforNC delivered a magnificent speech here in NC. Just a great time with fantastic, hardworking advocates. It’s never a bad time to support public schools or @PS1NC!

The reason it’s important for teachers and legislators to internalize this fact is because the proposal is SO common yet perpetually a mathematical impossibility. Continuing to point to admin salaries as a plausible solution to teacher pay is a trust-eroding distraction.

@Vickitkd In 2021-22, 35% of all private school students in NC attended in either Wake or Mecklenburg counties. Ten counties had zero private schools. Another ten had exactly one.

@wch33 @DrJuneAtkinson @ThomTillis Sen. Tillis is a great reminder that the folks who think The Market will provide all the accountability we’ll ever need for schools think the same thing about public health regulations in the food service industry and predatory for-profit colleges—views which are quite unpopular!

@DrJuneAtkinson @ThomTillis With public funding should come accessibility (some privates will not accept all children who come to their doors), accountability (little to none) and transparency (a number of examples of misuse of funds).

Feeling inspired by @JustinParmenter’s work to identify the discriminatory practices of NC private schools receiving taxpayer $ via vouchers. Let's look at how their policies discriminate against students on the basis of disability, shall we? #nced #ncga

@MrsCleaverinnit @donaldbryson Actually so much worse than that. The statistically significant finding appears to be concentrated in just 29 voucher recipients attending schools that already use a form of the IBTS.

Don’t know why the fuck anyone would listen to Thom “I cut public education by HALF A BILLION DOLLARS as NC House Speaker” Tillis when it comes to education funding.

@RaSekel @nckhui Probably worth mentioning that there were some folks (one is, uh, on the Wake board now) going on and on last fall about an alleged 20-year decline in test scores because they didn’t understand this.

#nced #ncpol These are the kind of calls I get. I had a caller insist that the State Board of Education had changed the cut scores on state exams this year to artificially raise NC school passing rates. When I asked him how did he know it, he said of course it's happening b/c

@nckhui IIRC, historically the opposite is true, right? Over the years, the tests themselves have been re-normed to have more rigorous standards. So the requirements for passing an EOG now are different, and more difficult, than they were years ago.

@AnalyticsEqv Destroying public education and lying about it with a smirk is Tillis’s legacy as Speaker. He’s probably feeling nostalgic.
