Vajrayana turned these guys into protectors and guides. Christianity was less tolerant and as a result has lost a lot of potential talent

I think if Christianity wanted to redeem itself for our century, one thing it could do is apologize and welcome back all the fae, selkies, satyrs, dryads, goblins, oracles, and minor gods that it either drove away or ruthlessly hunted

@danielbrottman highly recommend The Making of Budddhist Modernism by David McMahan. goes deep into how science, romanticism, and christianity became fused into the western conception of buddhism

It’s intriguing that when Buddhism entered China they had two reactions (generally): 1) this stuff makes no sense, so they used all Daoist vocab to translate it, and 2) “the Buddha is obviously Lao Tzu in disguise.” 1
