Founders who never built companies pre-AI have at least one big advantage: they have fewer preconceived notions about how to build a company. This applies to how software should be built, when a product that people worked really hard on should get dissolved, what tools finance should use, how GTM should work, or really anything and everything else. "The culture is: you don't maximize for your function, you maximize for the company."

New episode of Uncapped with @MaxJunestrand from Legora and my partner @chetanp. Every time I'm with Max I come away thinking "this is what it takes to build an AI native software company." He's one of my favorite founders, hope you enjoy. (0:00) Intro (0:31) Legora's origin story (9:05) Building an AI-native company (18:16) No sacred cows, the models will be amazing (27:36) Winning pilots and global expansion (36:43) Starting in Europe (47:15) Stockholm culture and "blodsmak"

Why can a startup with 50 engineers make up ground against an incumbent with 5,000? You'd think big platforms have the data, distribution, money...why can't they build technology faster than startups can earn distribution? Bret calls it a "strategy tax" and gives a crisp articulation of exactly why startups have the opportunity to win.

This week, on Benchmark's new podcast Uncapped 😂, I sat down with @btaylor, founder of Sierra and Chairman of OpenAI. He's easily one of the most impressive people I’ve met in tech or in general. We talked about AI and the saaspocalypse, the unique considerations of building an AI native / agent company, whether young or experienced founders have the advantage right now, Codex and OpenAI ads, and much more. Learned a ton from Bret, hope you enjoy. (0:00) Intro (0:20) The Saaspocalypse and systems of record (12:34) Sierra's landscape (17:05) Outcome-based pricing (24:22) The rapid evolution of AI support technology (28:21) Young founders vs. experienced founders (34:12) What comes next beyond support (38:47) Codex and the future of software engineering (51:49) OpenAI and advertising (54:59) Working with investors and boards

I asked Bret a question that a lot of people are thinking about lately since he's as equipped as anyone in the world to answer: "Does a system of record have a place in the world if nobody logs into it?"

As many VCs raise eye poppingly large funds, Benchmark is one of the few hold outs staying small. Peter articulates why this is integral to how Benchmark works. "More capital equals a whole bunch of activities that...eat at the essence of why we practice the business.
Jack Altman@jaltma

New episode of Uncapped with the full Benchmark partnership. They're arguably the best early stage venture firm of all time and have retained a model and approach that very few others have. I learned a ton, hope you enjoy.

Eric Vishria is an incredibly clear thinker and communicator. Here he talks about passing on investing even when the founder is clearly special -- he gives the example of Alex at Scale. "People will see that specialness...and talk themselves out of stuff for other reasons."

Khosla doesn't get nearly enough credit for their OAI investment. They were the only institutional investor in the first round and they made the investment that was truly hard to make when others thought it was dumb. They aren't the type to take credit but they deserve it here.

New Uncapped with two of the greats, @vkhosla and @rabois. I don't think I've seen them on a podcast together so I was especially excited about this. I asked them about how they work together, how they see the world, what's changed in tech, and of course a little bit about their politics. Enjoy. I owe a lot of my career to @vkhosla & @rabois First time they've done a joint interview together Highly recommend a watch. You can see what I got to see for years, which is how two of the GOATs work together closely, and make each other's decision making even better together

I asked Keith and Vinod if they think AI companies need to be built in different ways to previous generations of startups. "I think it's fundamentally different."

I sat down with Daniele Perito to talk about his new company @depthfirstlabs. He was previously on the founding team of Cash App and cofounder of Faire. We talked about the future of software security in the age of AI and what becomes possible for both attackers and defenders, what he learned from Cash App and Faire, and what's the same and different across these companies. Hope you enjoy. People debate what goes into being good at venture investing. Ben has clarity that being able to win is what matters most, and they've architected the whole firm around it. "Being able to win kind of automatically, I would say, gets you to the top tier of returns."
Jack Altman@jaltma

a16z just announced their newest fund - $15 billion! I had @bhorowitz on Uncapped to discuss how they run the firm, how he thinks about venture talent, a16z's overall investment approach, deploying capital at scale, media, and more. He's easily one of the most impressive people I've gotten to have on the podcast. Hope you enjoy.
