Tom Holland, like Peter Parker in the new Spider-Man movie, has been dealing with some growing pains. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ starts off by speeding through what would have been Peter’s college years to pick up with him in his early 20s. He has also been going through a spider puberty of sorts, causing his wrists to sprout organic web slingers that render his old mechanical ones unusable and making him prone to fits of black-eyed aggression. This is his equivalent of a spider molting, shedding its old exoskeleton to hopefully emerge — stronger and more resilient — into adulthood. “But the movie has no idea what that adulthood might look like,” writes film critic Alison Willmore. Part of this is a Spider-Man problem — growing up has never entirely suited Peter Parker, who’s always felt most natural as some kind of student. But part of this is an issue with Holland, who’s risen to movie-star status on the strength of the Marvel character but who himself is teetering on the edge of a grown-up career that feels a lot less certain. When Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, with whom Spider-Man is inexplicably paired up for this installment, growls, “I’m gonna kill that kid,” it’s a reminder that Holland also just spent ‘The Odyssey’ playing a boy waiting to come of age while elsewhere in the same film actual children get enlisted into war. “Timothée Chalamet is the same age but plays characters whose core tension is their desire to be taken seriously as men despite their youthfulness,” writes Willmore. “Unlike him, Holland feels perched on the edge of the unknown — like the movies aren’t allowing him to grow up because they’re not sure what a grown-up Holland character entails.” Read Willmore on how, in the latest ‘Spider-Man’ film, Holland, like the superhero he’s playing, struggles to show us what might be next: nymag.visitlink.me/fN7C7U

@NYMag This is really weird considering the avengers comes out in 4 months with a ton of middle aged actors ….. also comparing him to Timothee? Why does he have to have a similar career? They’re clearly very different people

Men are so awful. MJ owes him nothing and Peter literally understands that and is able to see it from her perspective. So why can’t these fuck ass little boys understand?

@_BrodyDanny_ @TweeterManee @VanityFair You’re arguing over the less important part of my argument I’m saying why does Tom get a time limit in marvel and no one else? I’m not here to argue about “well tobey was technically 25 not 30 so hah” because it’s pointless

With 'The Odyssey' and 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' 30-year-old Tom Holland is poised to be king of the box office this summer for playing two childish roles. We think it’s time he hangs up the tights vanityfair.com/story/tom-holl…

Spider-Man Brand New Day unexpectedly terrible. Three/four different movies mashed together (less cohesively than even Raimi’s third). Characters show up then disappear at random. A 10-15 min period in the 2nd half where Spidey’s not even in it. What the hell happened

@AlexTG_ @camgreenbug Because she’s been shown to be very intelligent she probably thought it was strange that he was so protective of her considering they didn’t know each other even punisher was confused about it and she seen the letter and had a feeling it was for her

@YaBoiRex8 @cyanCrusader @VanityFair That’s my point though why does Tom have to have an age limit for being Spider-Man when there was no complaint when they came back and no noise when the average age of the avengers is people over the age of 40

My honest review: it’s a good movie on its own, but a bad Spider-Man movie. I’m very disappointed with this film and with the MCU’s take on Spidey in general. Once again they didn’t give me the Spider-Man I wanted to see. Yes, we finally get better swinging and improved visuals, and Peter feels more like his comic-book counterpart - but they turned this into more of an X-Men setup than a Spider-Man movie. What I wanted: Harry, Gwen, Black Cat, maybe Kingpin. Actual Spider-Man villains as the main threat. Maybe even a proper mention of Uncle Ben. What I got: Jean Grey and an obscure X-Men villain who appeared in only a handful of issues as the main antagonists. It all feels like setup for another franchise. And they should’ve moved on from Ned and maybe even MJ, bringing them back makes it feel like the series can’t evolve. Overall, very disappointing.

If you’ve seen it, give me your honest thoughts on Spider-Man: Brand New Day

@uniquelydiff56 @VanityFair I mean Toby was around Tom's age even he stopped, too. They made those Reimi movies in very quick succession. Tom has been Spider-man since 2016 if you only go by release dates, which was 10 years ago. Toby was, by those same metrics, done in 5. Andrew less, around the same age

@fearedlaker Girl it’s literally a follow up of the other 3 movies!!! What did you expect? Of course they’re going to pay homage to them and how was Jean gray not a strong villain because she was sympathetic?
