@dflieb Resisting AI's encroachment into kids' creativity and motor skills is an extremely valid concern. It's good your kids are still drawing. But I don't think there's a conspiracy or something re: the pushback. They are legit concerns & big tech often shows little regard for them.

This tweet went somewhat viral, and one interesting observation is that nearly 100% of the many dozens of critical quote tweets are from anon accounts. Anyway, I think it’s great for my kids’ creativity, and it doesn’t stop them from drawing with crayons. Technology is a tool. Use it however you wish.

Hit Christmas gift this year: Stickerbox. Press button, describe something, AI generates an image and prints on a sticker. Great product design. We’ve printed hundreds of stickers so far. Made by one of my YC Summer 2009 batchmates!

@morgoth_raven @ABAOProductions The photography analogy is problematic for me b/c AI is more like commissioning a photographer to capture something for you. There's taste involved but nothing like the creativity/skill required to execute in the moment.

This is the kind of comment I respect, nuanced, professional, experienced. You're right, Aharon, toxic AI evangelism exists. Overpromising. False timelines. Creating unrealistic client expectations. This hurts everyone. But distinguish that from what I do: 5-day production workflows. Extensive iteration. Sound design. Integration with Photoshop and other tools. This isn't the "magic bullet" you're critiquing. Where I push back: prompt-only is not an artist. Photographers "just point camera." Camera handles technical work. Still artists. The concept, vision, curation - that's where artistry lives. Same with thoughtful AI use. My core point: I've never seen AI artists attacking traditional methods. But I see traditional artists attacking AI methods daily. That's the asymmetry I'm highlighting - not denying your industry concerns, but noting who's actually on the offensive.

Notice how AI artists never tell traditional artists/haters to "push buttons" and try AI. Never shout to put down the pencil, it's 2025. But traditional artists/haters constantly tell AI artists to pick up a pencil. It's like tattooed people vs non-tattooed people: Tattooed people don't give a fuck if you're not tattooed. But some non-tattooed people won't shut up about tattoos being wrong. Confidence is quiet. Insecurity is loud.

"the time spent making it mean absolutely nothing." Except that is what gives creative work all the meaning and purpose in the world.
OscarAI@Artedeingenio

@xshadowpanther The only thing that should matter, the only standard that should be applied, is the final result. The tools used or the time spent making it mean absolutely nothing.

@billywoodward Can someone please explain the gatekeeping argument to me because it always just sounds like gatekeeping = enjoying the products of your work ethic, talent, and skills. What am I missing?

@marmaduke091 we live in an age dominated by people who have lost their childlike wonder and curiosity, including most "artists" and creatives. AI represents an unimaginably expansive creative playground, truly the stuff of dreams. it's irresistible if you have the "spark."

Hating everything AI and hating everyone who uses AI in professional/hobby work is truly dark ages stuff. It's the same kind of reaction people had to: → Photography ("it's not REAL art") → Synthesizers ("it's not REAL music") → Digital Art ("just clicking buttons") → The Printing Press → Recorded music (Sousa called it "canned music" that would kill singing) → Writing itself (Socrates thought it would destroy our memory) ...the list goes on forever. The Luddites weren't heroes. They were just scared. Every single time: moral panic, gatekeeping, and being on the wrong side of history. You are not saving the world. You are just making it a worse, dumber, less fun place.

Google continues to HIDE data from publishers — so we can’t see just how badly they are screwing us over with AI Overviews & AI Mode Google Search Console breaks down data for forums, images, videos — basically every feature EXCEPT the 2 Google is using to “re-imagine” search

Nothing to announce when it comes with breaking out AI Mode and AI Overviews in Google Search Console @JohnMu

@uponarriving @CreeCoder @ChuckYouSuck Zoom out to institutional level or academia as a whole, it is another trillion dollar company/industry. Stripped to the mechanical level, human learning and AI training is the same - building matrices from other matrices.

@neilturkewitz If “derivative” equals exploitation, then culture itself is exploitation. Language, art, music all built on what came before. The irony is that humans remix endlessly and celebrate it as creativity, yet when AI does the same they suddenly cry theft.🤡

This! Stop with the fake analogies. AI is not like the camera. It’s not like recorded music. It’s not like the printing press. AI is rooted in exploitation. It could not exist in the absence of existing works. It is wholly derivative.
DJ Pain 1@djpain1

The only thing AI can be compared to is colonization. Autotune, drum machines, DAWs, etc aren’t comparable. They didn’t infringe on millions of creations, they didn’t cause catastrophic job loss and they still required human operators. These fake analogies are propaganda.

@StilyanX @cinamarina I think some will utilize that bandwidth to "upgrade" their thinking in their specializations. But AI is seductive. Big tech will do anything for engagement and happily turn brains to mush if it means $$$. For the masses, I think the net impact is cognitive loss.

Interesting to see some of these use cases. Automated room preferences are cool but not a fan of over-automating the hotel experience. Luxury hotels need warmth. I'll always be far more impressed by a human remembering my name rather than a machine. travelandleisureasia.com/in/hotels/ai-s…
