the breakout of the american civil war actually had pretty significant implications on the global production and shipping of cotton, so even from an international perspective, the president who cause the civil war is probably the worst one

People will say Buchanan or Andrew Johnson but I kinda view those guys as plumber-ball era presidents. The US was just so much less globally important and powerful so even a truly terrible president mattered so much less. Trump’s idiotic whims become instant global problems now.

i think they’re moreso about the horror inherent in nostalgia, but i don’t think it’s in a particularly critical way. he seems to be happy with the dialectic nature of the past and critical of the illusion of resolution or of unique complexity inherent in the present

bernie’s most famous ad used a simon and garfunkel song, some of his most famous merch had pictures from his mayoral win in the 70s. it idealized a purer past which had been corrupted and must be made anew with political activism and social progressivism. a patriotic return

in a real sense, the version of conservatism that lunch very clearly participates in is inclusive of bernie’s political movement too, itself steeped in an almost heideggerian understanding of present struggles through the lens of past activism.
