The knots being connected is not the takeaway here even though it is the obvious thing one notices. Look at the shape of the whole thing . It is a circle and looks like a wheel to show there is no way to answer the question - “when did our first karma start” . Karma is beginning-less and keeps rolling from birth to birth and itself is generated because of Ajnanam (ignorance) of our true nature (Brahman) and the Ajnanam/Adhyasa cycle is anaadhi (beginning-less) . The learning is not just that the karmas are interconnected but to know this endless cycle can be broken only thru Jnanam (knowledge of our true nature) by approaching a qualified guru. No amount of fresh karma can exhaust our stockpile of stored karma - we have to obtain jnanam to get out of this endless cycle. Knots or Granthis is the depiction of our mistaken mixing up with one body/mind. Knots as explained in Lalitha Saha Sahasranamam verse 38-39 are 3 types - Brahma Granthi (the knot of insatiable acquisition of material things and pleasures), - Vishnu Granthi (the knot of hoarding and not sharing) and - Rudra Granthi (the knot of ego and envy) . It took Vishwamitra 10,000 years to break the Rudra Granthi - which means (k)not easy for the rest of us and requires concerted effort and wisdom from a learned guru (Bhagavad Gita 4.34) . And most of us are far from even breaking open the Brahma Granthi which is why Lord Krishna screams from the rooftop in the Gita to understand the difference between real and unreal (2.16) and the urgency for us to prepare our minds and put effort to do since shravanam.
