in 1969, 89% walked or biked to school.
in 2009, 13% walked or biked to school.
That suggests parenting culture plays a much larger role than car culture. Or parenting culture IS car culture.

@the_transit_guy Wow. This all-modes regional map didn't exist when I was a kid spending summers in Munich. I probably spent 100s of hours staring at the S+U-Bahn map. I was so excited to discover a U-Bahn + Tram map one year. If this had been around, I think I would still be studying it 🤣

@bobbyfijan On the flipside, neighborhoods where larger units are most in demand (eg Park Slope), lack of new housing in that format exacerbates supply on the low end of the market because subdivided units or buildings get bought and combined.

@bobbyfijan There is also substantial impact on stock of larger family-friendly units if new studio & 1BR housing is hard to build because it substantially increases the incentive for investors to take existing larger units off the market and subdivide it

Supply & Demand are over emphasized in housing affordability
Yes increasing Supply lowers price. BUT not that much for units that are "weak substitutes." Highly amenitized Studios, shared bed co-living, and ADUs don't correlate THAT well with family units

@capntransit Absolutely, so let's just say the money is going to feed the hungry. Harder to argue against, whereas ppl who just oppose paying to drive into the city now can latch onto the pretty compelling argument that the MTA is mismanaged & will just 🔥 💵

How about just "man dies..."? Leading with cyclist makes it about the mode and is also a dog whistle to many people for 1) entitled MAMIL road biker
