Blocks are not the only insulation, EPS/Rockwool insulation is put on the outside, as part of the facade. Typical final R: 35-45

@ClubLeonNft @fluffinfuwa @kenobi1_obi I used the wrong R-value (apparently there's metric and imperial). US equiv. is 12-20 From what I can see, typical US new build has total 13-25 for ext. walls. Here in Croatia, a typical new build is often Porotherm 30-38cm with 10-15cm EPS/Rockwool. R 36-43.

@fluffinfuwa @kenobi1_obi I used the wrong R-Value, Porotherm 30cm has US imperial R-value of close to 20 by itself. And no, vast majority does not live in old stone houses lol. Depending on the country, on avg. 15-20% are pre-1946. US is about 16%.

@vedran425 @kenobi1_obi The average wood frame exterior wall has an R-value of 20 50% of homes in Europe have little to no modern insulation. and are just thick stone walls.

@KalKatDaddy7 @IEllect53684 @fluffinfuwa @kenobi1_obi They're not perfect, but I grew up with them. They do offer great per room control and generally I loved the warmth the provide. Never had issues with air being too dry, but that can be easily offset.

@IEllect53684 @fluffinfuwa @RicePaper2137 @kenobi1_obi Yes, that's an advantage of typical NA construction where you can easily use ductwork. Forced air AC is great, forced air heating fucking sucks. Radiators, under floor heating etc is better.

@KillE99698 @kenobi1_obi There is, it's just not used often. Maybe for a partition/interior walls in new builds and remodels, on steel studs/frame. In some cases, drywall is installed on top of a brick block (like Porotherm) to avoid the hassle of plasterwork.

@fluffinfuwa @RicePaper2137 @kenobi1_obi Except people don't use fully solid concrete walls and never really did. example: Porotherm (fired clay/brick perforated blocks) have an R-value equiv. of 3.5-5.5 depending on thickness (24-55cm). On top of that, outside rockwool or styrofoam insulation is applied if needed.

@MagellanQuest Houses are not "trapping heat", they're insulated. It works both ways, however they also don't help as much if you don't heat or cool actively. Heating was always needed and now we need cooling/AC as well.

Northern European homes were built to trap heat. For generations, that was an advantage. Now it is becoming a liability. As tropical nights move north, buildings designed for cold winters are struggling with hot summers. Climate change is not only altering Europe’s weather. It is turning yesterday’s solutions into today’s problems.

I feel like it's not anymore cheaper to travel in East vs. South Europe. Greece is probably more affordable than Croatia now.

My feed is full of Europeans posting about getting these lil ‘portable’ air conditioners. They’re a getaway drug to full fledged AC systems. American shaming is working. Feel the vibe shift.
