Antoine Watson killed an old man for no reason. The DA at the time called it a "temper tantrum". He will likely serve no prison time.

Harsh punishment for crimes doesn't act as a deterrent. What matters is swift punishment that one believes is very likely to happen.
That's why it's so funny to me that people are talking about deterrence in the Mary Lau case -- I'm sure lots of people are dying to total their Mercedes SUVs by ramming into bus shelters and the only thing holding them back is the idea of being imprisoned for it.
