@beffjezos I hope so, but I doubt it. The dominant culture strikes me as quite rigid and slow to change. Look at their refusal to embrace electric vehicle manufacturing, for example.

‼️⚡️OMG, this is next-level trolling! 😅 Zelenskyy released an official presidential decree allowing Russia to hold its parade in Moscow, specifically stating that Ukraine would exclude Red Square from its strikes for the duration of the parade—while also including the exact military coordinates of Red Square in the decree. DECREE OF THE PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE No. 374/2026 On Holding a Parade in Moscow. Taking into account numerous requests, and for humanitarian purposes outlined during negotiations with the American side on May 8, 2026, I hereby decree: To permit the holding of a parade in the city of Moscow (Russian Federation) on May 9, 2026. For the duration of the parade (starting at 10:00 a.m. Kyiv time on May 9, 2026), the territorial sector of Red Square shall be excluded from the operational use plan of Ukrainian weaponry. Red Square sector coordinates: 55.754413 37.617733 55.755205 37.619181 55.753351 37.622854 55.752504 37.621538This Decree shall enter into force on the day of its signing. President of Ukraine V. You probably learned that "thank you" in Japanese is arigatou gozaimasu. There are 5 levels. Pick the wrong one, and you'll sound rude, weirdly formal, or like you're trying way too hard. Here's how it works. Level 1 — Doumo (どうも) You drop coins on the counter at 7-Eleven. The clerk hands you the receipt. You say doumo. That's it. "Got it. Thanks." Almost no weight. Level 2 — Arigatou (ありがとう) Your friend hands you a beer. You say arigatou. Same energy as "thanks, man." Level 3 — Arigatou gozaimasu (ありがとうございます) A stranger holds the elevator for you. You say arigatou gozaimasu. Polite. Respectful. Neutral. The safest default in Japanese society. Level 4 — Arigatou gozaimashita (ありがとうございました) You finish dinner. As you leave, the staff bows and says arigatou gozaimashita. Past tense. Built into the word: "This is over, and we are grateful for it." Level 5 — Makoto ni arigatou gozaimasu (誠にありがとうございます) A CEO opens his speech at the company's 50th anniversary. Makoto ni arigatou gozaimasu. "Truly, thank you." Used when gratitude has public, formal weight. That's the 5. Beyond them, there's osoreirimasu A thank-you mixed with apology. Used when someone goes out of their way for you, and your gratitude carries: "I'm sorry I made you do that." Five levels. One word, arigatou, branching into five different shades. Each level says something the words themselves don't. Who you are. Who they are. What just happened. Next time someone in Japan thanks you, listen to which level they used. That's where the real message is.

I missed the last train in Seoul once. Phone at 3%. Didn’t speak Korean. It was raining, freezing, and I had no idea where I was supposed to go. I tried calling an Uber but my card kept failing because of my bank fraud protection. Perfect timing. I was standing outside the station looking completely defeated when this older woman walked up to me and started speaking Korean. I told her I didn’t understand. She pulled out her phone translator and typed:“You are lost?” I nodded. She asked where I was staying, looked at the address, then motioned for me to follow her. This woman walked me almost 15 minutes through side streets, holding her umbrella over both of us while I apologized every thirty seconds. When we got to my hotel, I tried offering her cash for helping me. She looked genuinely offended. Typed into the translator again:“If my son was lost somewhere, I hope someone helps him too.” Then she bowed and walked away in the rain before I could even process what happened. Some places still treat strangers like human beings first.

I took a taxi in Tokyo from the airport to my hotel. The driver was this chatty old guy, asked where I was from, why I was visiting, the usual stuff. I told him it was my first time in Japan and I was nervous because I don't speak much Japanese. He laughed and said "don't worry, Japanese people are kind. You'll see." When we got to my hotel, the fare was like ¥8,000 (about $80). I handed him ¥10,000 and told him to keep the change. He refused. Like, actually refused a tip. Said "I didn't do anything special, just my job." I insisted, he kept refusing. Finally I just got out of the taxi and walked away while he was still trying to give me the change. I thought that was the end of it. Three days later, I'm at a restaurant and struggling to order because the menu is all in Japanese. The waiter is trying to help but we're both getting frustrated. Then someone behind me says in English "excuse me, can I help translate?" I turn around and it's the fucking taxi driver. Different clothes, clearly off duty, just happened to be eating at the same restaurant. He helped me order, sat back down at his own table. When I tried to go over and thank him again, he'd already left. The waiter said he paid for my meal too. I never even got his name.
