Just finished implementing StorageTexture3D in threejs and added a new example to show how it works! Real-time 3D texture computation is now possible with WebGPU. Super fun to see it running live!

@unmodify @threejs A video on this will be posted soon where I share more details… but in short: this is using a compute shader to position points inside a mesh, an atomic counter to determine the number of points and indirect drawing. ( also you’d have to zoom in on the material to see details)

I do think it's quickly catching up other modern graphics APIs, though. And non-coincidentally, it does seem like there's an uptick of people trying to build better game tooling on the web recently. But I agree. More than anything, accessible tooling lifts a huge barrier to entry.

We've had WebGPU and high-powered GPU hardware for a while now. My question is, if people are so bullish on frameworks like Three.js, why haven't we gotten high-quality production AAA or AA experiences, on par with something you would see during Summer Games Fest? Some guesses: 1. Three.js is just so beginner friendly, that it mostly attracts beginner indie devs who don't have much experience making games. Most of them never go past small demo projects, and never dig too deep into the necessary nuances of graphics or games programming, enough to push through into AAA land. 2. Most professinal game devs work in native, professional grade game engines, as they have been doing for decades. A very small fraction of them care or are bullish about web dev, but in general not enough of them do. 3. Few studios (like @BitshiftEnt) seem to be building actual production games that are web-facing, but they're doing so using custom renderers built around custom engines. Most people aren't willing to get down and dirty with custom solutions (even if its just modifying Three.js sources and building around that). 4. Streaming assets is a little trickier on the web, but this might not be a particularly difficult problem to solve, it's just that people haven't earnestly tried in the context of completed games.
