@thdxr I just bought a steamdeck and now my desktop tower is causing me a similar sentiment, I'm considering just hiding it somewhere else in the house and use it as home server...

i need some advice on my setup it's complicated here goes - i currently have 1. a desktop dual booted linux/windows 2. a macbook air 3. a remote server where all dev happens i am happy with 2+3 but need to figure out what to do with 1 i don't game a ton anymore but ill have a few times a year where i get into something a lot of that lately has been through game streaming with nvidia - it works amazingly but half the time it's one of those games where the publisher refuses to list it there - so i play on my desktop (will steam to my laptop or tv also) so i don't fully want to give up the gaming pc, but also im tired of this giant tower that im constantly wondering how to upgrade part of me wonders if i should completely go to mac studio, i like how powerful and simple it is and all my work is on my remote linux machine so it'll still feel linux-y but then i totally give up on windows is there anything i should consider?

It's crazy to me how nobody knows how to build a laptop that matches the quality of an Apple MacBook Pro. Everything I've seen is a downgrade hardware-wise.

@VicVijayakumar If you are already on Fargate, adding an AWS Batch cluster to it is not difficult. You will be able to ditch the custom webhook and just trigger the API to launch jobs directly from lambda.

I'm curious to know how you handle asynchronous / background processing in your applications. I have a service running on AWS Fargate that emits messages into SQS. I need to do things based on the payload of those messages. Example: { type: 'compress-image', payload: { bucket: 'big-images-dev', key: 'asdf123.png' } } The SQS is configured to be an event trigger for a Lambda function. The Lambda function then POSTs that message to a webhook in my app with an auth token. The webhook is just a bunch of switch cases which invoke different internal services depending on the message type. When everything used to run on stateful infrastructure (ahem $5 VPSes), I ran scripts that long-polled SQS instead of this.

@johnrushx @wdegroef Hey John, maybe you could write a bit on how were your experience with django and the reasons for moving away, we (your django dev followers) would love to hear your take on it.

This is my new infra Best part of having no users: you can keep building cool new features Once there are many users, your focus suddently shifts on bug fixing and making sure things work fast and reliable. now when it all runs smooth & at low cost, I can get back to shipping

@vsbuffalo @egor__marin Not always feasible or quickly done, but when possible, docker based "jobs" are a breeze to limit cpu/memory

@egor__marin Not sure! There must be a way though. In our case, the limits are soft and when it’s not at full utilization we use more than our allotment

If you have a shared lab server, and (like me) are constantly trying to squeeze as much compute out of your fair share as you can, I have a new Rust tool loadrs that breaks down usage by user, and warns if people are over their allotment:

Time for another round of 'what's in my poop'. We're now 6 months into doing weekly shotgun sequencing of a wastewater virome. Who can name the 10 most common families of virus we detected from wastewater that infect humans?

Two/Three months ago I subscribed to JetBrains AI Assistant and I'm finally picking up on AI assisted coding! It does work for small completions, documenting and even produce larger&usable code blocks (as long as you give good instructions ) The IDE integration is the icing on the cake!
