Another 3-6 inches is forecast through tonight, with isolated totals over 15 inches possible after some areas already received 6-10 inches. ON THIS DATE IN 1957: Hurricane Audrey made landfall between Sabine Pass and Johnsons Bayou, Louisiana around 7a CT June 27, 1957 as a strong category three hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph and a minimum central pressure of 946 millibars (27.94 inches). Striking unusually early in the Atlantic hurricane season, Audrey caught many residents off guard with its rapid intensification and immense power. Here is a look back at this historic storm: The Impact: Cameron Parish, Louisiana, bore the absolute brunt of the storm, experiencing a catastrophic 8- to 12-foot storm surge that pushed violently for miles inland, sweeping buildings entirely off their foundations. The Toll: Tragically, over 400 lives were lost, making Audrey one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history. Whole communities were changed forever in a single morning. The Legacy: Audrey remains the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the United States during the month of June.
