Let me tell you another story. When I was 27, hot-headed and arrogant I moved across the pond to NYC to trade the US markets for Barc. One of the bonds I traded was Gamestop. Our analyst hated it, and after looking through the financials I hated it too, so naturally I went short. Now this was a call-constrained bond, not equity, so its upside was capped and I didn't do my bollocks on the trade, but naturally all of Wall Street was shorting this bond due to upside/downside and the borrow cost to short it was crazy. I remember reading Reddit etc and thinking "man these guys are idiots, I've worked as a professional trader for 5 years and I have the best analyst and these guys haven't got a clue and are about to lose a tonne of money". Of course, the price just kept going higher and higher and I eventually had to cover the bonds and although I didn't lose much money it was just a stupid trade that made me really angry. I also used to trade Hertz bonds and CDS and it was the same thing there when retail would bid up the equity, but I did better on that trade. Anyway, like most people on Wall Street, I just thought I was smarter than retail and retail was dumb and eventually I'd come out on top, but then I started reading about how much money people were making on Gamestop...and then on crypto. It then occurred to me, "man...I can sit here on my high horse and think I'm smarter than these guys but at the end of the day I'm waking up at 5.30am every morning to get into the office at 6.30am, have to answer to my boss and all our clients, have like 2 weeks of holiday and basically chained to the desk for most of my life and even though I'm making good money, some 18yo kids who probably couldn't calculate a bond yield are outperforming me and having the time of their lives". It was at that moment, I knew I had to make some changes, and basically went all in to crypto + NFTs in early 2021.
