Antoine Rousseaux@AntoineRSX
Why do birth rate maps and IQ maps look almost the opposite?

@BehizyTweets This is laughably misinformed. Any US business (provided they set up a subsidiary in country that is VAT registered) can claim input VAT rebates. VAT IS NOT A TRADE BARRIER, IT IS CHARGED ON ALL PRODUCTS, EVEN THOSE DOMESTICALLY MADE.
English

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick just exposed a method foreign countries have used for decades to cheat the United States in trade.
"Some countries have a value-added tax and they take that VAT tax of 20% and they use it to subsidize the production of their domestic industries. That's why we can't sell cars there because they give a rebate."
And these countries have the gall to act shocked that the United States is finally acting.
English

@JamesSurowiecki Here’s a thing.. VAT has been included in UK trade barrier calculations. Every product (even UK made products) have VAT applied to them, so how is it a trade barrier? Also, do US sales taxes get included in the calculations?.. I already know the answer..

Just figured out where these fake tariff rates come from. They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us.
So we have a $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Its exports to us are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges us. What extraordinary nonsense this is.
James Surowiecki@JamesSurowiecki
It's also important to understand that the tariff rates that foreign countries are supposedly charging us are just made-up numbers. South Korea, with which we have a trade agreement, is not charging a 50% tariff on U.S. exports. Nor is the EU charging a 39% tariff.

@John_Stepek Than more interest for large banks. Taxing unrealised gains is madness. Sure, tax people on profit but then we already do that, so….
English

@John_Stepek Extrapolate this over all wealthy people. What do you think happens to the market? Everything tanks and the regular retail investor loses out. Stocks are no longer seen as the place to invest your money, liquidity dries up, many stays in bank accounts earning nothing other ….

My wife and I have some heartbreaking news to share: we lost our baby at 21 weeks
We’re devastated, and I’ll likely quieter while we take time to grieve and heal.
You may see me lurking when I'm looking for a distraction but family comes first
Thank you all for for the kindness you’ve shown us
