🙋‍♀️ Question: If you are running an app with Ember 3.x or lower, what's preventing you from upgrading? I’m running a clinic @EmberConf 🐹 to help people get over the 4.0 hump. Reply with your story 👇, and share for more 👀 please! cc: @wycats

@dodeja @scottmessinger @emberjs I'm not on here much, but I'd love to hear more about your concerns. Message me on the Ember Discourse and we can set up a call if you'd like.

@scottmessinger @emberjs Yeah I have concerns. We are heavily invested in it. Although if they future is grim then we need change our course. It's very hard to find engineers with ember.js experience.

@wagenet @skylight That template is super easy tho, just a bunch of variables listed. Removing this sum brings the allocation number from 390k to 9k. I also tried this gist.github.com/penso/88b9bf3f… and it’s the other way, Skylight shows less than MemoryProfiler.

Used a single simple line to sum a column in Ruby ActiveRecord: `user.whatever.sum(:content_size)`. @skylight reports 390,000 allocations! WTF I checked, the SQL call is right. AR does is in a “smart” way.

@fabienpenso I just looked at this a bit more carefully, and what you're looking at is the view rendering, not just AR. This definitely seems possible in that context.

@wagenet I feel like this Skylight report is wrong, using a memory profiler I get 159 objects allocated for this same line.

Just noticed @skylight is actually written in Rust, but they don’t offer Skylight for Rust backends…

Is NewRelic stil the best way to monitor a Rails app (30M+ requests/month), or should I look at apps like @skylightio or @AppSignal?

@AmIshoBaraka As a former Baptist, now Eastern Orthodox who's been a fan of yours for a number of years, I was pleasantly surprised to hear your recent positive comments about Orthodoxy. This is probably very presumptuous of me, but it's a topic I'm always happy to talk about.

I'm kind of amazed at how infrequently "contribute to OSS" is offered as advice to people looking for advice on getting their first programming job. It's not a magic bullet or anything, but ...

@MattStopa @gaurav9576 @wycats @MisterAwesan @jeresig @tildeio @emberjs Agreed, it's not fast, but in a healthy OSS community people will start to value you. Not to mention the fact that the more interaction you have the more you'll feel comfortable making the more glamorous contributions. In my experience you can see real progress in a year or two.

@wycats @MisterAwesan @jeresig @tildeio A problem with OSS is that it can be really hard to break in especially when you are new. You had a great situation latching onto one of the biggest libs in software. But generally you'll have to fix hard things (for a noob) to get your pr approved on a big project.
