I've collected together 4 of my enhanced Autochrome photos from the First World War, which look more like modern-day re-enactments than genuine images from the Great War, but original they are - photographed in colour on glass plates over 110 years ago, bringing the past a little closer to us. They are not colourised.

It was good to present a talk about Orlo Williams ‘Inside GHQ’ Gallipoli Diary today. “The history of the Gallipoli campaign rich in military lessons, should also serve as a general warning to all who at crises place undue confidence in Cabinets.’ littlegully.com/books/inside-g…

Lessons from Gallipoli have been resurfacing in recent weeks. History shows us that narrow waterways cannot be captured by force alone. The Dardanelles is an example that should not be ignored otherwise the Gulf of Hormuz will be another naval graveyard #diplomacy

‘If you write a book, mind you rub it in… all possibility of surprise is gone.’ GHQ’s head of operations to Orlo Williams, 1 April 1915. The Gallipoli landings were 24 days away. Orlo wrote it all down. That book is now available. littlegully.com/books/inside-g… @OrloWilliams

Main updates last week were nearly 3,000 connections to the @scouts Roll of Honour, which makes for a really interesting global map of Scouts who died in the First World War. I've also been identifying a good few more for them via other connected sources #source=Scouting+in+the+First+World+War&lat=10&lon=0&zoom=2" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">astreetnearyou.org/#source=Scouti…

I’m sad to report that my dad passed away peacefully on Thursday. He’s gone to join my mum. All of the memories of him that have popped into my mind since then have been like this one - fun and never taking himself too seriously. I’m going to miss him terribly.
