My PhD student submitted her thesis chapter last week. 3 citations were completely fabricated. Authors that don't exist. Journals never published. Studies that never happened. She had no idea. ChatGPT hallucinated them. Now we're retracing every citation in her entire thesis. This is how to avoid this from happening to you:
