We love to say we’re building a ‘love of reading’. The evidence suggests we’re doing no such thing. Pleasure doesn’t lead to fluent reading; fluency makes pleasure possible. Reading for pleasure should be an outcome, not a curricular aim. Trying to teach enjoyment is missing the point. Link below...

This is a difficult read, but one that should be compulsory reading for everyone running Scottish education. I met the teacher that wrote this and every word of it is true. Worse, it’s happening in countless schools in Scotland. Behaviour in Scottish schools is in crisis, because teachers and leaders are prevented from doing anything about it. It’s a preventable tragedy, and children pay the price for the adults’ incompetence and blind allegiance to ideology. Everyone should be raging about this. This is all avoidable, at little cost but enormous gain. scotsman.com/education/teac…

Very promising study on how 5 rounds of repeated reading can scaffold at- and above-grade level content to build, fluency, stamina, and more: ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10… I would love to see this approach used with a knowledge-building curriculum, rather than random passages.

Love this new 100% Sheet crafted by Miss Birch @FrieslandSchool and her team. The aim here is to explore layers of meaning and the first pieces of scholar work are exceptional. #SmashingIt

If students are reading more than three years behind, they need an individualised teaching programme. Reading catch-up for older students: one-to-one or small groups? wp.me/p4hKgx-Vk (5 min read).

The jury is in. For the most part, tech in the classroom produces poorer learning outcomes. The article is overly long but chock full of evidence about why we should reconsider its use. The EdTech Revolution Has Failed buff.ly/3Z6AMnp
