The annual Sport England Active Lives Child Survey is being distributed to schools from this week for completion by children in Years 7 to 11 (age 10 to 17).  Inevitably, there is a question asking children if they are a: Girl, Boy, Other or Prefer Not To Say.  A parent contacted us expressing her concerns about the gender question in the survey. We wrote to tell Sport England that it is using language likely to cause confusion and introduces contested gender ideology to children as young as 10 years old. We also pointed out that collecting data on gender instead of sex invalidated the results of the survey - on which decisions about funding and resources are made. The Government-backed Sullivan Report warned against conflating sex and gender as it corrupted data gathering. Sport England told us: ‘We will be updating the Active Lives Child survey questionnaire for the next annual wave of the survey, academic year 2026-27. This change will involve the addition of a sex question to the survey.  ‘Based on the guidance available, age appropriateness, and questionnaire length, we will also review whether a separate gender identity question should be asked of any of the young people surveyed.’ We are pleased that Sport England has taken this matter seriously. The Active Lives Child Survey introduced the gender question in 2017. It’s a shame that nearly a decade of data collection has been compromised. We thank the parent who raised her concern with us. We hope other parents will feel that they, too, can speak up about the insidious creep of gender ideology into our schools and sports.
