@nothing_really3 Pretending? Anyone can listen to the records; there’s nothing to pretend. I think the first 2 are truly era defining. I’ll entertain a debate about how good the band has been throughout their discography but the idea that they’re inferior to the Killers is just laughable

Here's the thing: The Strokes were ridiculously huge (basically gods) among people obsessed w/the concept of rock music. Who care about the cultural/coolness elements of it. Spend hours debating which era is best. They were never that big among people who just "like music."

the strokes don't really make sense to me. they carry themselves with an ostentatiousness that would only really make sense if they'd made something as unimpeachable as "mr. brightside," while the guys who actually did make "mr. brightside" are polite to a fault

@pressurem4chine Psycho shit without autotune would be better than Ode to the Mets! It also has that epic crescendo vibe but it’s much more interesting musically. Even with the annoying autotune I think it is one of the best songs on the new record. It is getting a lot of undue hate though

Everything else is pretty good, though not mind blowing. Despite my criticism, I feel like they’ve put in more into this than the average legacy act. It never quite feels like they’re half-assing it and the instrumentation is really superb throughout. But perhaps they’re just not working out their ideas long enough to produce something truly transcendent despite getting close to it here and there I think it’s fair to say this album is inferior to the holy trinity of ITI / ROF / TNA, but I am not sure it’s their worst either, though only time will say for sure.

The negatives: Falling Out of Love is a nice ballad but the uncreative instrumentation + heavy autotune makes feel like I’m listening to some boring pop rock band like Maroon 5 or something. I get that why so many people love it - it is a nice melody - but I just can’t place it near the top for me with so little going on for it besides “sweet melody” Liars Remorse is a weird song that simultaneously sounds like pop slop melodically AND throws in some random uninspiring experimental instrumental with that “harmonic minor” solo and structureless vibe.., it comes off really disjointed, neither avant-garde or truly catchy Mellow Moon feels like a demo… has some interesting ideas but feels severely undercooked. Pulling off a whole ass album while vacationing in some tropical paradise is probably doable if you’re young and at the peak of your creative powers but for late career veterans like Julian and Co it would probably be better to sit with these tunes and perfect them for a while before releasing them onto the world

The new Strokes album is actually fine. It’s not terrible and it’s not great. Most of the takes surrounding it have been completely overblown The positives: Notably Going Shopping is a legit banger, possibly best track in the album and gets better the more you listen to it. I could write a whole essay about how this is peak Strokes and song of the summer for me Psycho Shit should be terrible with that much autotune but honestly it kinda slaps? It is epic and grandiose, similar and nearly better than Ode to the Mets if it wasn’t for the autotune … and even then I’d say it rivals that song! It is definitely more experimental and the only thing it lacks is Julian’s voice in its unadulterated glory Dine N’ Dash feels like classic Strokes with a dash of new. Just the kind of thing most of us were hoping for with this album.

@kkb_soundsystem I find Fantano reviews very superficial as in his only describing what’s happening in the song but there’s no abstraction or sentiment beyond that. I think that’s what Julian is getting at. Fantano is truly an awful reviewer. It’s appalling he’s this famous

the weirdest thing about the julian-fantano beef to me is how jules keeps saying that anthony should "stick to the technical stuff, analyzing what studio stuff was recorded in, etc" – fantano barely ever talks about that?? his whole job is giving his opinion???

Kind of like the new Strokes album. A couple good songs & a couple clunkers. The autotune doesn’t work like 2/3’s of time. Probably low on a ranking of their albums but glad they are still releasing music.

There is a correct way to abuse stimulants to get peak results with least amount of negative side effects Never zero as that doesn’t exist in real life And no you can’t compete at highest levels without occasional stimulant abuse
