Today's fun brought to you by repeatedly telling the Agent to *not* refactor every single API client and instead only refactor the one API client I specified.

Each new day working with Agents to work on software projects is full of surprises. Sometimes, the good kind. Often times, though it's got me feeling more like this: youtube.com/watch?v=6jE0is…

@chacon I don't think it's like particularly earth-shattering stuff, but the amount of time it has to save for $20/month to be worth it is not very much. 😅

@chacon It's not uncommon for me to select a block of code, and use the "Edit" function to have Cursor refactor that block for me, or to write tests for it, or in the case of tests, make N variants for different inputs/attributes/whatever. It also tends to hallucinate less there IME.

I'm really struggling with Cursor. People seem to really like it and the Agent thing is pretty cool in theory, but I still haven't been able to get anything usable out of it on a real, existing project. Are real people working on real projects really getting real code from it?

You can write POROs in app/models. It’s totally allowed. You can model a domain without every model being an ActiveRecord model. You don’t have to make verb module soup.

Every time I walk into a codebase full of 4736 service “objects” that are just modules with a call method

@jnunemaker I am pretty familiar with how Heroku encrypts and stores app configs internally and feel much more comfortable with what’s going on there. And we use terraform for managing our config on the apps themselves (which is, eventually using HCP Vault under the hood).

@jnunemaker Running away from the poor ergonomics and security posture of the symmetric encryption implementation it is mostly (for Heroku config) 😅 The Shopify internal impl it was inspired by used asymmetrical encryption of values only, so merges and diffs both worked much better

How are people dealing with rails credentials for conflicts? The git diff thing isn’t working for me.

@mscccc Cool, that makes sense. Thanks. The project @p_ch mentioned in his reply seems interesting - gonna have to give that a look.

@wfarr ulid for example is ranked higher because it’s easier to copy/paste and use in URLs. Uuidv7 is good but ugly

Never has anything tripped the urge to be a BOFH and drop a line like “a lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine” as the request for a meeting for Boxing Day during my time off

honestly don’t understand how they haven’t caught the unitedhealthcare shooter yet. you don’t even need physical evidence- just go through their records and find who ended up dying after they were denied life-saving treatment, should be easy

For reasons, my music listening is split across Spotify and Apple Music, but I’m getting a kick out of how different they are because of my bimodal usage

DeKalb County says it's now 7 polling places currently evacuated because of bomb threats in the last hour of voting. County CEO says those voters will get to vote. @GaSecofState said earlier threats in Cobb & Fulton were likely Russian. We expect an SOS update soon
