I stared at her. I stared at the screen. I finally noticed that I wasn’t looking at the part of the screen where it shows you the difference. I was looking at the tax. “Ohhhh! I’m sorry...” (I most likely creepily mumble-laughed to myself here). The lady grabbed the correct change out of my hand in a huff, shaking her head and frowning in shock, anger and disgust. I stood there at the register, haplessly hallucinating to myself. I could see the mom talking to another mom in the distance. I watched her mouth move and paranoiacally tried to activate supersonic hearing. I heard her saying “that girl, was SO STUPID. She was SO. STUPID. *chatterchatterchatter* The STUPIDEST barista *chatterchatterchatter* THEE STUPIDEST *chatterchatterchatter* THAT GIRL…SO STUPID….SO. STUPID. SOOOOO STUUUPID…” The words echoed on and on because I was also hallucinating. I just stood there with my heart thumping and mouth gaping open, trying to pretend to look somewhere else or look like I was doing something else because they looked at me and she pointed at me. I think I worked about one more shift there until I was fired.
