@texasrunnerDFW That’s quite a jump you’re making with that correlation. I presume we should look to you for guidance in life.

You can tell a lot about a person’s outlook in life when you’re at a youth soccer game and it starts pouring rain Some parents are excited and think it’s fun Many huddle under umbrellas, quietly tough it out, and cheer Some go sit in their car Some bail completely The same is true for the players. Some kids level up and focus harder. Others muddle through, and others get completely discouraged

@BarbellFi Exactly. Physicians get a late start in their financial lives, often with significant debt. They deserve and earn their incomes.

@DandMussoccer If he’s the Bosnian Messi, why has most of the soccer world not heard of him. Maybe he’s just a Bosnian.

I see what you all were saying about getting out of Inter Miami’s new stadium when driving. It’s complete chaos out here. Left right at the final horn, like a fan would. Gridlock. Parking attendants are yelling at people for honking their horns. Take the train. Good night.

It’s July 2010 and I’ve got to break the World record in this event in order to win the World championships I’m in Denver Colorado, who is hosting the Masters World Championships of the Highland Games For those that are unfamiliar, the Highland Games trace their origin back to medieval times. The people living in what is now present day Scotland were at the time apparently under English rule and they were banned from having weapons. As they had no weapons to wield they kept themselves physically ready with a series of athletic contests involving throwing stones, metal weights and various other farm implements. Over time these informal contests were consolidated into a specific series of throwing events now known as the Scottish Heavy Events. Now I was at the time of this story 43 years old, working as a military orthopedic surgeon living in Surprise Arizona. I had was in my second year of competing at the games and had been doing pretty well. In the US the games consisted of 9 events. You had to be wearing a kilt in order to compete and generally it was at a festival complete with bag pipes, dancing, drinking and sometimes haggis, a peculiar Scottish delicacy of sheep’s heart, liver and sometimes lung mixed with oatmeal, spices and fat. The events consisted of the Braemar stone, basically a standing shot put of a big stone (usually 20-24 lbs), the open stone, a smaller stone often 16 lbs were you were allowed an approach. 2 weight for distance events, which were basically a ball and chain type of deal weighing 28 lbs for the light one and up to 56lbs for the heavy one. You would spin around like a discus throw and launch it as far as you could. Now that particular event was interesting as spinning around with 56lbs results in huge forces that have to be countered. I’ve seen it knock 300lb men on their butts before. Needless to say many of the athletes were huge guys often 6’8” weighing 350 lbs. We also threw 2 hammers weighing 16 and 22 lbs and wore giant blades sticking out of the front of our shoes to keep us anchored into the ground as we wound the hammer around our head and shoulders. The above were all events that guys coming from track and field background like shot put, discus and hammer would excel. As someone with no previous background in throwing I always struggled with the technique here but my brute strength and athleticism helped me to stay competitive. The final 3 events include the weight over bar, where we would stand under a cross bar raised up to progressively higher height and try and launch a 56lb weight over the crossbar with one hand. This event and the next on generally favor strong and explosive athletes and they were event that I tended to do very well in. The signature event of the Scottish Games was of course the Caber toss. This was usually a long pole 16-22 ft long weighing up to 120 lbs that you would have to stand it up, bend down, scoop it up into both hands pop it into the air briefly, balance it upright on one shoulder, let it get steady and then take off running while balancing it. Once you got up to speed you would then simultaneously step on the breaks and attempt to launch the end of the pole high into the air hopefully resulting in it flipping 180 degrees and landing perfectly straight in front of you where you would be given a score based on how straight it landed. The straightness was described as though you were looking at a clock face. A 12:00 o’clock was considered a perfect throw. The final event was a bit of an oddball event called the sheaf toss. A small 16 lb burlap bag filled with hay was stabbed with a pitchfork which was then used to toss the bag over another very high cross bar 20-30 feet in the air. Because of the enormous heights and equipment needed to contest this event it often was not featured at every Scottish games and I believe not at all in Scotland. Ok so I had been competing now for about a year and a half and my throws were

@DrPlantel But let’s be real real; if you’re on your deathbed, you likely don’t have an appetite and are probably not coherent. And if you are eating cake and ice cream, you’re likely not dying imminently.

Yes, hospitals could improve the nutrition quality of their food. But zoom out for a second. Patients are there temporarily. What happens when they leave? Do they have the money, access, time, and support to “eat healthy”? Because that matters a hell of a lot more than a few days of hospital meals. And let’s be real, if I’m on my deathbed and someone tries to shame me for eating cake and ice cream… I will throw a salad at you.

@Jarm21 Exactly my fear. Miami is not a soccer or possibly a sports city, and the US is not a soccer-loving nation. I’m sure there will be a lot of empty seats tonight, despite a new stadium and the GOAT playing. This is very worrying for Miami and MLS, especially after Messi leaves.

#InterMiamiCF
