@wigster0 @SerderM78082 @nonregemesse In the CoE people make something of an effort for lent, not usually outright fasting unless they have a spiritual reason but giving up luxuries (chocolate or alcohol or the like) is exceedingly common, even amongst some agnostics and atheists.

@wigster0 @nonregemesse I think there’s actually a command in the New Testament specifically against openly advertising the fact you are fasting, something along of the lines of “don’t let your face look miserable” either.

@wigster0 @nonregemesse There’s no religious fasting in Christianity these days is there? Most people I know who fast do it for health reasons in a secular way

There was the horse. There was the water wheel. There was the windmil. Those were the most force you could produce. For all of human history. Then The British changed that. A world above the horse, water wheel & windmill is - inherently- a British world.

@wigster0 @ShoahUkraine Stalin didn't give the mentally challenged much of a chance to live either. So you're lucky you didn't live during his time.

Stalinism is the communism of the street. It belongs to the people you pass every day and barely notice. It belongs to the man searching for food in a trash bin, to the mother counting coins at the market, to the worker whose hands are cracked from the cold. For me, communism is not a theory whispered in lecture halls or a clever phrase repeated at comfortable dinners. It is something raw and urgent. It is the cry of an empty stomach. It is the fear of winter with no heat. It is the simple, human demand that life should not be a daily struggle just to survive. It means bread on the table when there is none. It means a roof that does not leak when the rain comes. It means a doctor who will treat you even if you have nothing to pay. It means that a child can fall asleep without hunger gnawing at them, and a tired worker can come home knowing tomorrow will not bring the same desperation. This is how I see the legacy of Joseph Stalin. Not as an abstract symbol, but as a hard, uncompromising attempt to force history to answer the needs of the poorest. It was harsh. It was flawed. But it was driven by the belief that dignity should not belong only to the fortunate. Socialism becomes real only when it is felt in the bones of ordinary people, when it turns survival from a gamble into a guarantee.

@AcademicAgent_X It is true that Pimlico Journal follows a model where we have many contributors. But J’accuse, at least until recently, had almost all of their articles written in-house — also completely valid. Yet I’m not sure you treat us very differently, Neema!

@wigster0 @ShoahUkraine Didn't at least 4 million people die of starvation in the middle of Europe in the 20th century? Or didn't they? Do you think everyone is an idiot?

@ShoahUkraine According to reports he himself prepared, at least 4 million people died of starvation. Is this what you call "the cry of an empty stomach"?
