Dusk in March is about 6:30pm. These people are skipping lunch and waking up an hour early for breakfast.

@wigster0 @nonregemesse I think there’s actually a command in the New Testament specifically against openly advertising the fact you are fasting, something along of the lines of “don’t let your face look miserable” either.

@SerderM78082 @nonregemesse I see it mostly in Orthodox circles, it's probably still fairly relevant in R.Catholicism too. In regards to Protestantism, my impression is it's dropped off a cliff edge. (Or they could be better at it than anyone else and just keep it really quiet lmao.)

It means a roof that does not leak when the rain comes. It means a doctor who will treat you even if you have nothing to pay. It means that a child can fall asleep without hunger gnawing at them, and a tired worker can come home knowing tomorrow will not bring the same desperation. This is how I see the legacy of Joseph Stalin. Not as an abstract symbol, but as a hard, uncompromising attempt to force history to answer the needs of the poorest. It was harsh. It was flawed. But it was driven by the belief that dignity should not belong only to the fortunate. Socialism becomes real only when it is felt in the bones of ordinary people, when it turns survival from a gamble into a guarantee.
