It is already taking out the largest asset class in the entire world, Chinese real estate.
China is learning, as Japan already learned, that falling population means few home buyers, and an inevitable property market crash. 1/2

Every western country needs - and I’m not joking - a tier 3 city that can absorb foreign capital the way the U.S. has with Miami condos.
Otherwise that capital floods your country’s prime city like it has to Lisbon or Toronto and distorting real estate for the locals and depressing economic productivity.

For Chicagoans: Whether transplant or born-and-raised in Chicago, we have to stop coping with the lakefront/riverwalk-posting and face reality. Chicago is in trouble. YoY, things are getting worse: its financial sector is falling behind Dallas, population is stagnant while the national population grows, and public spending, debt and taxes are ballooning w/o services improving.
Chicago needs to be allowed to file bankruptcy to wipe out bad debt and unsustainable pension obligations and recover while its local economy is still robust and intact, before it’s too late and it enters a death spiral. Chicago has great assets, but we need a financial fresh start, there’s no shame in bankruptcy.
We also have to stop electing incompetent, insecure, provincial weirdos to manage a global city; that’s never going to work. If local problems weren’t enough, the unaccomplished trust fund baby Governor is actively selling out city finances for union support in pursuit of pie-in-the-sky dreams of becoming POTUS.
The Bay Area has already surpassed Chicago economically, it is in fact “America’s Third City” and Dallas isn’t far behind (-15%). Wake up, Chicago—it’s not 2008 anymore!

US metro estimates of GDP for 2024 have been released.
You can see how absurdly rich the SF Bay Area is. SF + San Jose had a combined GDP lower than Chicago in 2012. Today, they're 35% bigger. We need to start thinking of SF, not Chicago, as America's third city.

Interesting job growth comparisons for 2025.
-North Carolina gained 82k new jobs. Texas was 132k.
-Texas has 2.8x more workers.
-North Carolina’s job market grew at twice the rate of Texas.
Also Texas job growth was meaningful in only two sectors - healthcare and construction.
Meanwhile Florida saw only 40k new jobs, running half the growth rate of Texas and 1/4 of North Carolina.

@RyanHansenSpace The engines are canceling the spin at first but then induce a spin and keep at that angle inducing the spin right up until the second engine cuts off. I would bet it was planned.

That’s all good, but I really don’t want to live in Dubai. England is, in many respects, an objectively nicer place. It’s not an giant artificial shopping mall carved out of an unforgivingly hot desert. Can’t we have a government on our side here?

NOBODY tells you the real reason people move to Dubai. It’s not the taxes. Everyone leads with the taxes because it’s the easy answer. The real reason is quieter and harder to admit. It’s that for the first time in your life, the country is on your side. You spend 30 years in the West being treated like a suspect. Your bank watches you. Your government taxes you and resents you for earning it. The news tells you that wanting to be successful makes you the problem. Then you land here and something flips. The bank wants your business. The government wants you to build. Nobody looks at your wealth like you stole it. Nobody makes you apologize for working hard. You don’t realize how heavy that weight was until somebody takes it off your back. That’s the part the haters will never understand. They think people move here to dodge a tax bill. People actually move here to stop feeling like a criminal for doing well. 🇦🇪
