@StacyCloyd @wmata @wmataGM Well, the wheels are metal and the track is metal! Any time you go around a curve with a tight radius, the flange of the wheel will make contact with the side of the rail to guide the train through the curve. This happens as a normal part of everyday operations.

@wmatastuff @wmata @wmataGM Fascinating! Glad to have learned something new today. Metal on metal sounds less than ideal (literally, it sounds bad; is also seems like it would damage the cars eventually) but I am a train enjoyer, not a train expert!!

The @wmata train I saw going over the Anacostia as I was biking along Benning Road was making a screeching noise and looked to be sparking along the tracks. Hopefully @wmataGM already knows about it but figured I'd share!

@StacyCloyd @wmata @wmataGM Nope! Just a function of metal on metal through a turn for the screeching, and the 3rd rail sparking is just from the car’s 3rd rail shoe sliding off the end or onto the end of a segment of 3rd rail which happens a lot during regular operation.

@wmatastuff @wmata @wmataGM That's good to know, thanks! I was definitely a little concerned. Does it put a lot of wear and tear on the cars?

@SwiftySanders @6dam_O @NYCMayor I would assume they have some sort of bus stop bulb-out or the lane shifts or something of that sort. The bus wouldn’t stop in the middle of the road.

@6dam_O @NYCMayor I agree with that… i guess its not clear to me how I would get on and off the bus safely. Thats whats missing from the main renderings.

Right now, 70% of the people on Fifth Avenue are pedestrians but they can only use less than HALF of the space! That's going to change under the plan we rolled out to completely transform Fifth Avenue into a WORLD-CLASS pedestrian-centered boulevard. Learn more: nyc.gov/office-of-the-…

@RayTrainToTrop @alanhenney @Amtrak @HelicoptersofDC My understanding is that this is more of a capital renewal project rather than maintenance. They said that drones were not feasible due to a variety of reasons which i can’t remember off the top of my head. I think the helicopters are more stable esp with passing trains/wind

@yfreemark The problem is that this Home Depot and the Giant are always busy and very important to have. There is only one other home improvement store in the city - the Lowe’s on SD Ave. This area could benefit from just stacking the parking and building housing around it.

@beyonddc 14th cannot support artics because of a turn near Takoma and the platforms between Florida and Thomas circle aren’t long enough.

Northern busyard on 14th St NW is the one that would really make a difference if bigger. If WMATA had unlimited room there you'd likely see more artics on 16th, 14th & Georgia Ave. It's currently being rebuilt but IDK what that means for artics.

Composition of bus fleets in big US agencies: • Seattle, Minneapolis & SF the highest use of artics. • New Jersey, Maryland & Houston big on commuter coaches. • DC, Atlanta & Orange County the most basic Via @NaqiyNY

The D.C. Metro system is planning a return to self-piloting trains in coming months, 15 years after automated trains were turned off in the wake of a deadly crash on the Red Line. wapo.st/3MSSUeG

@BostonHanSolo If you look at the STEER act (Charles Allen’s bill) it actually has a way to forgive up to a pretty significant amount of money in fines that just requires education of some sort etc.

Problem with excessive ticketing is it impacts the many poor/non-white people in DC and govt likely has one SLOW way to appeal. Fine money can be bill money.

@ajlamesa @2AvSagas @MarketUrbanism Yeah that’s what I figured- since I’ve heard about them using the readers in NYC before. Oh well. Not much you can do I guess, and also the average rider doesn’t know they can’t check metrocards 😁

@ajlamesa @2AvSagas @MarketUrbanism In other places I’ve seen them use mobile readers to check if that metro card paid the fare… maybe once thr OMNY rollout is a little more substantial this couls be possible

@2AvSagas That would be nice, but as @MarketUrbanism noted, there’s no way to check people have paid a fare. They can just say they used a metro card.

@ANCJonah IIRC they brought a bunch of track equipment and let you sit in the cab of a train!

We need WMATA to do a Touch-a-Truck style event where the public can come see all of their vehicles that work on train tracks and maybe sit in them. Asking for my son. Not me at all. But I will sit with him.
Metro Forward@wmata

#YourMetro team is tackling the Green Line this weekend! More than 350 crossties are being replaced & thousands of screw lags. Crossties, the pieces of wood that hold the two running rails together, require specialized equipment seen here. Shoutout to our talented crews! #wmata

I’ve been bike commuting in D.C. for kids’ camps the last few weeks, which has been great. But I’m still amazed (aghast) that the bike lanes on 11th St NW aren’t protected. It’s like a bike highway but you’re cruising close to garbage trucks and Metro buses. 😬 @DDOTDC @WABADC

@karolkarpinski Ah, and those are still there- and will be back once the escalator replacement project is done. I think the cardinal directions work better in the core, and there’s no harm in having them there in addition to the terminus on a different sign…

Dear @wmata, I don’t know when you decided to become New York, but these new wayfinding signs make no sense when your system map looks like this:

@wmatastuff You keep referring to ‘the map’. The beauty of well-run public transport systems is that ‘the map’ is not necessary to find your way if you know the line and the station.
